1989 Oldsmobile 88 Delta 3.8L

Summary:

This is a very reliable and economical car

Faults:

Starter went out at approximately 150,000 miles.

First alternator went out at approximately 100,000 miles and the 2nd one at about 225,000.

Water pump replaced at about 200,000.

Replaced front wheel bearing about 125,000 miles.

Car currently has an electrical short that will drain the battery in about three days if car is not driven daily. I am unable to locate the short so I placed a knife blade switch on the ground post.

Bought car new and would buy another if were available.

General Comments:

This is a great car.

I have spent less than $1,000 in repairs in the 19 and half years I have owned the car.

Car has been rear ended twice, one with major damage and one with minor damage, right front fender also damaged once, most of the car still has the factory paint, looking bad in places but still holding.

This is still a very reliable car that I still drive daily.

The A/C still works great with no trouble history.

The transmission still works great with no trouble history, I have serviced every 50,000 miles.

Car stills gets about an average 22 MPG.

Car is very comfortable.

1989 Oldsmobile 88 Royal Brougham 3.6L

Summary:

Awesome car!!!

Faults:

Regular maintenance issues. Now at 215000 miles it is miss-firing. But it is just the timing. The paint is faded. Front passenger window is very slow, needs new motor. No other issues which is surprising for the miles.

General Comments:

I am currently looking for another one. I love this car!!!

Bought the 88 Royale Brougham in DEC. of 2011. (only one owner and 77,000 miles). Must have been garaged kept, as it does not start easily if 88 degrees or above. Any suggestions?

Recently bought a 1989 Delta. I would like to know if climate control is considered "air conditioning"? I've been away from working on cars, and can't figure out different "happenings" on the car.

Would sell for the price I paid. New tranny, new alternator, new battery, tires have 3,000 miles on them. Rides like a dream.

Someone stole a wheel cover when I first brought it home, and am looking for another.

One rust spot, which will get fixed in a few weeks, and the headliner is now coming down (another minor project).

I'm getting 18.8 miles to a gallon -- not bad considering it was only getting 12 when I got it!). It only has 81,000 miles on it. I'm only the second owner.

What can I use on the white Cordoba roof? Can't find the stuff in the stores I used on my other car.

It was the battery -- starts up just fine now!

I have a 89 Delta 88 Royale. I lost my hub-caps, went on eBay and bought 2.

Please email me your asking or requested price for the Oldsmobile. I would not drive anything else but.

I just had three Oldsmobile Delta 88s in a row, and loved them all. They are crash resistant, but not perfect.

I currently have a 1989 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham with 202,000km on it. Excellent condition, everything works and looks great! Thinking of selling. What should I ask for it? I'm in Canada. Thanks.

1989 Oldsmobile 88 Royal Broughton 3.8L V6

Summary:

Comfortable ride and ages well

Faults:

Lots. But the car has over 250,000 miles on it.

Last week it started making a horrible noise, I had the harmonic balancer replaced.

A few months ago the rear brake lines were replaced.

In 2006 the water pump, ignition coil and the battery were replaced.

In 2005 the alternator.

The body is showing its age, and there are a few rust spots now. The paint has worn through to primer on the hood and trunk.

Windows and doors are getting harder to open and close.

General Comments:

A very comfortable car. A joy to drive. It's fast, and corners very well. 0 to 60 in 11 seconds. It would be better if the A/C worked.

The digital gauges on the drivers console are among the easiest to read on any vehicle I've had (newer and older ones).

I still feel this is a very reliable car despite the number of repairs I've had to make. It's never stalled once in the three years I've had it. Starts well in cold Canadian winters.

I'm no expert, but except for the A/C the engine is laid out quite well to minimize labour costs in most repairs. The A/C, however can only be accessed by removing the entire dashboard and steering column.

As it's aging, I'm going to have to retire it soon.

The windows squeak horribly when going up and down, the doors are hard for children to open, the power locks usually need to be hit twice to unlock all four, and gas mileage has gone down a bit. It's now averaging around 15 MPG city driving.
