1999 Oldsmobile Alero GS 3.4 V6

Faults:

I have had this 1999 Olds Alero for 3 months and all of the sudden my drivers side window fell inside my door. It has a bad regulator and I may need to replace the motor too, even though there is nothing wrong with it. The existing motor may not be able to be bolted on to with the new model regulator.

General Comments:

It has good power, but I am hoping repairs like this are not an everyday occurence.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 2.4

Summary:

It is a piece of crap!

Faults:

Replaced drivers side window regulator twice.

First three fan levels for climate control do not work.

Replaced brake pads multiple times and rotors once.

In the process of ordering new wheel hubs, and rotors and pads again.

Cracks and splits in dash.

Rubbing noise coming from drivers side rear wheel when making any slight left turn.

General Comments:

I had a Honda Civic with 150000 miles on it before this car and I wish I never let it go.

This car has been a problem since purchase with one failure to another.

The only up side to the car is when it does run it handles pretty well.

G.M. should buy back all the Alero's they have ever sold.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 V6

Summary:

Good*

Faults:

The key to owning an Alero is as follows:

*Change the Orange Dexcool out with Green ASAP

*Don't run over or in to things with the front wheels.

Dexcool is a great coolant if used with the proper gaskets and system, which the first year Alero did not have. This causes air to leak in the system, turning the coolant to a bad fluid that eats away things like water pumps, hoses, and belts. If you do not (which I did not) change to "green" you will do the intake manifold gasket, waterpump, belts and hoses.

The "Wonderful" GM design for the wheel speed sensors is to put them inside the bearing/hub assembly whith a very thin set of wires going towards the CPU. If you rip or tear one, or simply drive on a hub for a while, the sensor will fail, and you are out $400 per wheel.

General Comments:

This is a good fundamental car, and if you have ever driven an Achieva, you know how far the Alero has come. Put in context that GP cars are not meant to be driven 200k plus like a Toyota, and you will be happy, You can get a used Alero for $4000, drive it for a few years, and have a safe and comfortable vehicle. I have owned mine for 8 years, and save for what I mentioned above, and the typical GM alternator replacement every 50k, it has been a great car. If you feel sorry for yourself, look at the reviews for the comperable Pontiac Grand Am's, now there is a car that should never have been built. To quote a different review, "Maintenance is the key to a good relationship, people and cars alike." Do the work, spend the money, and get on with life!

If you don't think GM cars can be driven the distance of a Toyota, Look at my review of the 2001 Alero GL (I mislabeled, it should have been GLS in the review) I just recently passed the 400k mark. I left the review in September. Just remember.. Never use GM oil. Always use 100% synthetic. Amsoil #1, Castrol Syntec #2, Mobil #3. My email is jm18443@charter.net

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 2.4L

Summary:

I like it, but would never get another!!

Faults:

This car has has SEVERAL problems:

- Coil spring broke ($100)

- Fly-wheel broke ($750)

- Oil leaks ($200)

- Rear defrost stopped working (n/a)

- Automatic window motor broke ($400)

General Comments:

This is a stylish car. Handles well and is fairly quick! It has a moderately smooth ride and is quiet. It has visual appeal.

However, it drinks the gas like its FREE.

It has had a poor mechanical track record.

This car was cheaply made, and I have come to expect such from it. I guess you get what you pay for. This by NO means is a well built car.
