1999 Oldsmobile Alero LX

Summary:

This is a very good and attractive car

Faults:

Three or four times when trying to start the car, the "security" sensor light comes on. When that happens, it will turn over, but will not start until the sensor light goes out. (usually about 10 minutes)

General Comments:

Other than the sensor light problem, I like driving this car. It handles very well, and has great pick up. I also like the way it looks. It is by far the prettiest car I have ever had.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GL 2.4 I4

Summary:

A reliable, responsive car at a great price

Faults:

Dome light fell out and reattached under warranty.

Side windows scratched and replaced under warranty.

Alternator replaced at 76800 miles.

Rear side windows stopped working at 81400 miles.

Tie rods replaced at 82000 miles.

General Comments:

The Alero is fun to drive. The steering, suspension, brakes, and transmission work together to deliver a confidence inspiring driving experience.

The ride is comfortable over smooth roads, but can be jarring over rough surfaces like old concrete. The sport suspension takes a beating on poorly maintained roads.

The four cylinder engine delivers impressive mileage, but is stressed when accelerating the car from a dead stop and low speeds.

I have maintained my car and so far have not had major mechanical failures. The Alero is not a poorly built car. When a car is abused and not properly maintained it will start falling apart in time, regardless of its cost.

I'll miss Oldsmobile! They should have killed Saturn.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4L V6

Poorly engineered

Blower Motor Replaced Twice Still don't have two lowest Fan Settings.

Right front Wheel bearing replaced Twice.

Left Front Wheel bearing Replaced Once.

Head gasket leaked out coolant wrecked the motor had motor replaced at 85,000 miles.

Front brakes have been replaced yearly. Make a horrible squeeking sound when applied at a stand still.

Violently shakes the car when applied over 65 mph.

Rear trunk power actuator went out.

Gas gauge doesn't work properly, when it reaches 1/4 tank it starts going back towards full.

Alternator went out at about 100,000 miles.

Tire pressure light goes off every two weeks due to tires losing pressure.

Glue to seal the weld on the front edge of the hood let loose leaving chipped paint all along the front edge of the hood.

Rear window defroster went out.

General Comments:

It's a alright car just had what I thought was some bad luck. I really loved it when I bought it. But it just isn't built to last past the warranty.

And the cup holder in front of the shifter is useless. Can't put the car in park with a beverage there.

I am in the market to buy a new-used car. I am a college student, which means that I cannot afford too much. I found a nice looking Alero with 70,000 miles on it for a really good price. However, after reading these reviews on this site I'm pretty nervous and just hoping for some feedback. I feel that a lot of times people who take the time to give reviews on these websites do so because they are not happy, and those who are have no reason to comment so they don't. Therefore, naturally, the only comments are generally bad comments. So some good honest feedback would greatly be appreciated. Thanx! :)

1999 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4L

Summary:

This is the worst car ever built by any auotomotive manufacturer!!

Faults:

Issues fixed:

Wheel Bearing has been replaced.

Brakes have been replaced.

Power Steering hose has been replaced.

Continuing Issues:

Cruise Control does not work.

Key fob for locks/trunk release does not work.

ABS/Traction lights stay on.

1,2,3 setting for blower do not work.

Guaranteed intake manifold gasket will need to be replaced.

And the list could go on and on and on, when it's time I will be looking at a Honda or Toyota, companies that seem to understand what makes a satisfied customer.

General Comments:

Do not by this car, no matter how cheap it could possibly be. Dealers can't give these cars away let alone sell them these days.

I have the '99 Alero GLS model and it's a wonderful automobile. I have just turned 70,000 miles. The 3.4 V6 is very responsive and outside of preventive maintenance I haven't had to do anything to the car. As for Toyota and Honda No thanks, I'll keep my Alero GLS. Did I mention the awesome factory stereo!!
