2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL4 2.4 Liter

Summary:

Slick car, multiple problems!!

Faults:

1st

The mechanical track for the driver side window broke. $359.00 to fix. Still not fixed! Lack of funds.

2nd

Tried to start the car one day and all of the lists came on, but the door open buzzer sounded funny. The car would start for a few seconds and die. Change the fuel filter and that did not work. Had it towed to the dealer ship and they said it was a dead battery. Really strange signs for a dead battery.

3rd

Service Engine Soon light came on. Took it to Auto-zone to have the code read. Running lean and multiply misfires. The gentlemen told me to replace the spark plugs and if that did not work to check the fuel sensor. We replaced the spark plugs and that did not fix it. Took it back to the dealer ship and they said that two of the fuel injectors were bad and the other two were clogged. $500.00

I own two other fuel infected vehicles and neither have had any problems.

4th

Trac off light keeps coming on for no reason.

General Comments:

Nice looking car.

Seems to have a lot of trouble for being 3 years old and only 32000 miles. There seems to be big problems and Olds should make it right.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I have a 2000 Alero and I have had the same problems. The driver side window regulator broke, the service engine light came on and it spent 2 months in the shop I have put new spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump module, gas cap etc... and the light is still on. It runs now, but my gas mileage is not good at all. My low trac light comes on and sometimes won't shut off. the day I bought the car it was winter time and I turned on the rear defroster and it overheated and blew out my back glass. I really do like my Alero and I wish Oldsmobile would do something to fix these problems to.

Summary:

The many problems in this car make buying it not worth it

Faults:

Brakes are terrible. Have had to have them replaced quite often (three times in 47,000 miles). Had a terrible "squeaking" noise from the front brakes. Most places could not diagnose or fix it, but one garage was able to do so, but there is still a grinding/squeaking noise from the brakes.

Ignition sensor blew out.

Random lights come on on the dash. Today (8/11/03) my "Service Engine Soon," "ABS," and "Trac Off" lights all came on at once, while I was idling in park!

At about 6,000 miles, had a terrible oil leak in the engine. Specifically, the oil was leaking into the piston cylinders, and my low oil light kept coming on. Eventually, the car almost seized up (lost all pressure/compression, barley would drive). Had to have the engine re-built. Dealer took several times to find this problem.

General Comments:

Nice looking car. One of the better looking cars out there.

When it's running well, it's a great car and I love it.

However, many nuisance problems are making me seriously consider trading it in for a Honda.

It's blue-book trade in value is far too low. I won't even get what I still owe on it.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

The problem that you had with your service vehicle light, trac off light, and Anti-lock light can be fixed. All it is is a front wheel bearing hub that you need to replace. I had the same problem with my 2000 Alero.

I also agree that the Alero is a great car when it is running smoothly. I own a '99 Alero 3.4L V6 2-door with 90,000 miles. I bought the car with 35,000 miles and it was great until it hit roughly 60,000. The most CURRENT problem I am having is that the drivers side door latch is not working. (Meaning that my door does not latch shut!) I just had the same problem with the passenger door about 2 months ago. Also, my ABS and Trac off lights are on. This is due to a faulty wheel speed sensor. I have also had to replace both front wheel bearings - TWICE! It has received a new radiator, oil pump, drivers door window due to a broken regulator clip, and a window guide. My trunk release button is not working b/c of a faulty actuator solenoid. The fan inside of the car only works on 2 positions instead of 4. At one point my Service Engine Soon light was on. But it seems to have corrected itself. My turn signals work depending on the day of the week. And the best part of all is that I owe more than it is worth. The depreciation value of these cars seem to drop almost daily. GM is giving me no other choice than to have my next vehicle be a Honda. Just as I have had to replace my wheel bearings twice, THINK TWICE before purchasing an Alero.
