1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham Coupe 307

Summary:

Best car for the money, looks and comfort

Faults:

The carburetor has been overhauled once.

The exhaust has been replaced.

I replaced a tie-rod.

Replaced the water pump twice.

Resealed the intake.

The paint started to crack.

General Comments:

Very dependable car, will last forever.

Change out the rear end, most have 2.14's, drop in 3.08's out of an S-10 pick-up.

The seats are the most comfortable I've ever sat on and I work at a large dealership.

The interior is of high quality, and you don't get much road noise.

The engine has some serious torque when you consider that it was built when steep emission regulations were first introduced.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Summary:

A very good choice for someone looking for a low budget CLASSY car!

Faults:

Timing chain - GM used to use nylon teeth on the chains, so they wear out - car would start but would die when put in gear... replaced it two years ago.

Carburator - Very very hard to adjust, partly the fault of regulations for adjusting performance, requires special tools and servicable by a "professional" only!

Motor mounts - driver's side breaks all the time.

General Comments:

This is my first car- I still own it. I have driven hundreds of different cars at work (Valet) - and can say that I love this car more than anything else I usually drive.

Classic styling, comfortable ride, very solid.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

With the timing chain does it do a whole lot of valve damage when it breaks or do you just have to replace the chain. Is there any benefit to fixing it before it breaks like on a whole bunch of Honda's.

When the timing gear strips (usely the cam gear), the vehicle will spin over and not crank. If you have over 60 - 75,000 miles on a vehicle with this set up, change them, before it catches you when you least expect it.

I agree with the maintenance thing, but my car has only 60,000 kms on it, and it's an 83. The body is mint, there is no rust anywhere on the car, and the interior is absolutely pristine...

I have an 83 Olds Cutlass Ciera, a little bit different of a car, but it's pretty much all factory with 76,024 miles. Seats comfortable, smooth quiet riding and running. Carburetors can use a little redesigning, but they are good, reliable, solid, and safe cars.

Like I said, a little off subject, but still made pretty much the same.
