It has been a good car and still is, but things seem to be falling apart. It is a 3.8L V6.

Has made my family and I very happy for 7 years now
Heater would not turn off after vehicle was shut off. Computer chip blew in the on position.
Head rests have worn poorly.
Driver and Passenger trim had to be glued back on.
For a first car, I consider myself very lucky. The car had approx. 50,000 miles when I bought it from my mother. My model did not come with traction control however, unlike almost every other intrigue around...don't know why. I have done little things to spice up the car. It now has Oldsmobile mud flaps and XM radio, next step is a Flow Master exhaust for that quality American Feel. Will beat any annoying Honda Civic in my high school parking lot!!!

I'd buy another if I could
Remote entry sensor failed, replaced under extended warranty 20K? miles.
ABS pump failed (brakes worked, just no ABS) at 80K. Replaced under exented warrany.
Brake pads replaced at 70K.
Some paint flakes on hood and roof.
I change my own oil at 5K intervals.
The car was rear-ended by a Mitsubishi Montero, which bumped me into a F150. No damage to Intrigue, bent bumper on F150 (he was waiting to enter a parking lot, so rear end was lower). Mitsu front end bashed in.
The car is very comfortable on the highway and on back roads. I used it to commute California highway 17 (over a mountain) for several years. Cruises nicely at 100MPH, if desired.
Few troubles, low maintenance costs.

Fun to drive / own, but too many mechanical failures
I've had the usual repairs listed on this site as well as other Intrigue web sites. Crank position sensor, front turn signal sockets, intermediate steering shaft, oil consumption, etc.
My question is this. I hear of others getting good gas mileage, but I do not. On a highway trip I believe I only got about 24 MPG. In town it's considerably less. That's not consistent with how it was originally rated nor with what I hear from other owners.
Will changing the oxygen sensors do any good? Thanks to all who reply.
I love the styling, handling and overall performance of the car.

With the costly expense of replacing all the oxygen sensors, the best bet would be to get a couple cans of sea foam from your local parts store. You simply find a vacuum line to the intake manifold that sucks air while the car is running. Once you find one, crack open a can of the sea foam, insert vacuum line, and idle between 2,000 and 3500 rpm. The car will smoke and stink badly for about 30 to 45 minutes. Once the majority of the smoke dissipates, it's safe to drive. Check out a 25 mile trip on the interstate, it should be fine.

Replaced front turn signal socket @ 115 K miles. Otherwise, have no problems.
This car has impressed from the date of purchase and continues to do so everyday. The 3.5L dohc isn't as peppy off the line as my wife's 3.8 L Impala LS, but is so smooth that you have to keep your eye on the speedometer when driving or the local "smokies " will become your friend! The fuel economy is great for a car of this size. It handles superbly yet rates high in the luxury appointments in the interior. The Bose stereo with CD and cassette is superb! To sum it up, I think it's a great car!

The Intrigue was like the Fiero and many other cars that GM built. Once they had a winner on their hands (the last model year Fiero it was considered to be a great car by auto writers), GM killed it.
The only difference with the Intrigue (and to some extent the Aurora so I'm told) is that GM got it right the first time, so killed it early.
Very very sad. Let's hope that cars like the Pontiac Solstice do not meet the same fate.
