1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GL 3.8L

Summary:

For a V6, the 3.8L has plenty of zip with this stylish body!

Faults:

It seems that every 1 to 1 1/2 years apart, one or more of the power windows quits working! In Nov. 2001, the passenger side front and both rear windows quit working! In March of 2003, the driver's window quit working. In April, 2004 the driver's side rear window quit working! As of 9/03/2004, the passenger rear door window quit working! We're told each time by the dealer that a "regulator" broke.

We're lucky to have bought the extended warranty to repair these, but it sure is a hassle! Also, the dealer's paperwork shows repair costs about $400 per window! Hope I can buy another extended warranty when the current one expires!

This car is great fun to drive and to own. It's looks are sharp and handles great. But with the window trouble, I'm getting second thoughts!

Any suggestions? I'm considering buying a non-GM car! Seems like our previous car (1994 Honda Accord) never caused us any grief!

Dear Steven.

I own a '99 Intrigue and have the same problem with the windows. It's a bummer, but I think it's a very nice car myself. I love my Olds. I have the 3.8L "short star" engine and had to get a piston replaced due to a leak in a gasket on the oil pan. But in the process of replacing the piston I got the chance to fix up the engine. I bored it out and now the acceleration time is really great, 0-60 in 6.8 sec. One more problem is when I bored out the engine and drove for about 500 miles untill the mass air flow regulator chip gave out, so it was stalling while idling, but got that fixed also. Now my Intrigue is the nicest of all my friends cars with the Bose sound system and the leather. I really like the stereo controls on the steering wheel. Overall I love my car.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 3.8L V6 3.8

Summary:

Stylish luxury car with some bad luck

Faults:

This car has been reliable, yet has had it's days. I had to reseal the oil pan, it was leaking around 1/2 quart a day.

The Alternator had to be replace because it stopped working.

It has not had any real engine problems, the 3.8L V6 3800 is very reliable, I've abused it quiet a bit, but it still runs strong, I think the transmission is going. It seems to over-rev the engine a couple hundred RPM then shift when driving "conservatively". Yet shifting is not a real problem.

The interior lighting has been malfunctioning. The lights haven't all worked at the same time.

There has been a very big problem with the electrical, backup lights stay on all the time, only choice beyond repair was removing the bulbs. The right turn signal does work in front. The wires are corroded and grounding out, car electrical is very expensive to repair unless you do it yourself.

General Comments:

This car has had its days, it really needs to be repaired, but, I really feel that it was a good car to begin with, but then after being a drug running car (honestly, door panels are loose including center console), it needed the TLC that I cannot provide it. But definitely a good ride if you take care of it.

I really feel that it's a reliable car and I would buy another newer model, but they stopped making Oldsmobile vehicles.

The panel under the steering wheel rattles, very annoying.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue GX Twin Cam V6

For a olds mobile It's very fast

Faults:

Nothing Really ever gone wrong.

General Comments:

This car with the Twin Cam 3.5 L V-6 is a serious import burner I give Honda's and Toyota's the run for their money everyday.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue 3.5

Summary:

Nice car, but appears to have maintenance issues as it gets older

Faults:

At 65,000 miles, had to have the entire front brakes and rear replaced - new rotors, drums, etc. 1600.00 worth at a reliable mechanic.

Cracked windshield - but that was from a gravel truck losing a few pebbles at 70 mph quite a distance in front of me.

Oil consumption - since the car hit 50,000 miles, have needed to add a quart between oil changes (3,000 miles).

Am now having troubles with the battery light coming on after the car runs 5 - 10 minutes (battery was just replaced 3 months ago). Mechanics think it might be the alternator.

I have a constant problem with the windshield wipers/fluid release during the winter -- they freeze, regardless of the type of windshield wiper fluid used. This makes winter driving in Ohio very hazardous. More than once I've had to pull over and manually wipe the windshield. Very frustrating.

General Comments:

I enjoy driving this car.

It handles well in all kinds of weather, has good pickup, and nice lines.
