1997 Plymouth Neon 4door 2.0 DOHC

Summary:

Reliable, fun and fast little car

Faults:

Since I purchased the car, the drivers side door latch no longer worked, so I had to bungee the door shut.

Spedometer and tachometer stick sometimes.

I recently did an engine compression, and 2 of the 4 pistons are only topped at 80 (poor).

Valve covers leaking.

Struts were shot when I got the car.

Fan does not turn on automatically, had to rig up a toggle switch.

General Comments:

My 1997 Plymouth Neon Highline Expresso is THE best car.

I've owned. I've done repairs on it, and it was worth it.

The car handles smoothly around corners at 90mph.

The heater and A/C, radio are all working.

Easily goes 120mph. Love my engine.

1997 Plymouth Neon Highline sport 2.0 SOHC

Summary:

Comfortable, dependable, good handling car, that is tough overall

Faults:

Seems to eat front end parts (ball joints etc...), but it may be the bad roads where I live.

The car is a 2 door, which I like when I bought it, but not the driver's door has dropped and doesn't shut nice. Had the metal around the door clasp welded because metal broke around it.

2.0 was tough, but noisey with age.

Frameless windows were a cool design feature, but were quite noisy on the highways.

Leaks quite a bit of oil, not sure were, but it is coming from the back of the motor. Had it on the hoist, but can't tell because everything is covered with oil.

The head gasket has not gone (knock on wood), but is something I worry about. I drive it easy, and always check my coolant level once a month.

Spoiler has cracked over the years, requiring repairing twice. This is due to the jolt of the trunk closing, and a lack or sufficient anti-shock washers or mounting pads on the spolier's mounting points.

General Comments:

A tough little car, that is comfortable for its size.

Handles great, very sporty (with all new OE suspension).

Has endured things that most others wouldn't have (was driven for a month with almost no oil...3 times...eek! I check it every week now)

Relatively cheap to fix, parts easy to get.

Overall they were and still are a great car. Besides a few mishaps, my car has been a good one, that has been reasonable as far as repair costs. The head gasket problems still scare many, and although I worry sometimes still, this car has proven itself to be a tough little car.

1997 Plymouth Neon Highline 2.0L

Summary:

This is a Great Reliable Car

Faults:

No real problems. I've only had to change the oil, spark plugs, and every 300-350 miles, the gasoline!

General Comments:

This car was given to me after being left in a vacant lot for 2 years. It actually had vegitation growing throughout the engine parts and into the trunk.

All I had to do was pull out the weeds from the engine and put in a new battery. That's all It needed to start. Amazing! After two years of no service and literally abused by the surrounding environment it started faster then my parents brand new Audi.

1997 Plymouth Neon Expresso

Summary:

I Love my Neon!!!

Faults:

My head gasket at 30,000, but the manufacturer paid for the repair since I called them and complained like crazy.

The O2 sensor went out a while back.

The brakes continue to squeal terribly when it's wet or damp even though I have had the pads replaced. They were fine for about 2 days and then started the squealing all over again. My neighbors are convinced I have no brakes on my car! ha-ha!

General Comments:

I love this car even though I've had a few problems.

The gas mileage is great and it handles so well!

It's a perfect car for me to drive around in!

1997 Plymouth Neon Expresso

Summary:

My first car that I still adore despite problems

Faults:

I think the head gasket is blown since it's around that time for Neons to do so.

Breaks were pretty crappy along with the tires, replaced both around 35000 miles.

Dome light and stereo system wires were faulty and had to get them fixed at 30000.

The service light randomly comes on, even after you change the oil.

A/C stopped working at 47000 miles.

General Comments:

For as much problems I have had with this car I still love it.

It was my first car and I have had many good times with it.

The repairs haven't really been too expensive, although I have not repaired the A/C because that is quite expensive.

I hope this car will be with me for many years to come, it only has 54000 miles, and I plan on taking it with me to my 1000 mile move to New York.

Overall, I think each NEON performance varies on the individual car.
