1987 Plymouth Voyager LE 3.0 V6

Summary:

A reliable workhorse that is easy to own

Faults:

Lower radiator hose tube (metal) under intake manifold rusted out - 160,000.

PCV Valve keeps fouling/burning oil at idle - 170,000.

General Comments:

This van has been terrific! The 3.0 V-6 is absolutely indestructible. Even though it has overheated so many times from the coolant tube breaking and the resulting troubleshooting, it has held together - never popped a gasket!

The transmission has also held together nicely - even after repeated rapid-acceleration getting out on the highway. (C:

The van hauls a full load with ease, I have moved many times with it.

On-highway acceleration is particularly responsive!

The rear-most folding bench seat is pretty heavy, although the middle bench seat is not so bad.

1987 Plymouth Voyager LE 3.1

Summary:

I think I would try another one

Faults:

No problems until we hit 200,000. At that point both of the axel shafts quit working, and had to be replaced. It was questionable however if the repair shop actually messed up the drivers side axel intentionally just so they could replace it with a new one.

Then suddenly the reverse gear went out. We procrastinated getting it fixed due to finances. However, all other gears worked fine... we just learned how to park without reverse gear. We eventually found out it was one of the bands in the transmission and that the repair would cost many hundreds of dollars, so we just resigned ourselves to drive it until we could afford another vehicle.

In this waiting period, the front bakes have started to squeal as if the rotors were shot.

Now here I sit on July 2nd, 2003 and the vehicle will turn over, but not start. I have a suspicion that it could be the spark plugs or spark plug wiring itself and I will find out tommorow.

I really hope our federal tax refund check comes soon.

General Comments:

We are looking at another Plymouth Voyager vehicle, a 1993 model from a local dealer. This is simply because we have two young children and it is such a comfortable vehicle to drive and accommodate our situation. I just think we got stuck with a lemon.

Over 200k miles and you're calling this van a lemon? A little preventive maintenance and you'd still be driving that creampuff. Geez.

I hope you didn't buy that van yet. I've never had a 1993, but I have had a 1995, and a 1998. Both had low miles (Well under 80,000) and both gave us a ton of problems! Perhaps you could search for an early model s.u.v. that's received good reviews, and you wouldn't have to worry about excess repairs. Good Luck! :)

Hey there. The early vans were real troopers, and I feel for your finances. I find myself in those situations a lot, being a college kid. But do NOT buy a 93!! In fact if you want another Voyager, stick to 1990 and older. Yeah, they're older vehicles, but I'll tell you why. In 1991, Chrysler started switching from the A413 (very solid and durable three speed hydraulic tranny) to the A604 (electronically controlled four speed, possibly the worst ChryCo tranny ever manufactured) which are LEGENDARY for their failures. Get a base four cylinder or bare bones Mitsubishi 3.0 model if you go any newer than 1991 and make sure you have the three speed. You'll be glad you did.

I agree with the Jan. 6th commentator, do NOT buy a post-1991 Caravan or Voyager. If it's an inexpensive family-hauling vehicle you're looking for, I say go for a Chevy Caprice/Impala station-wagon (or Pontiac Parisienne Safari) from 1978-1988. They are (according to this site) quite dependable and can seat up to 7 or 8 people (with the third row seat option.) You can generally get these inexpensively, usually between $1000-$2500. Thank you and have a good day.

1987 Plymouth Voyager LE 2.2 4 cylinder - Carburated

Summary:

Awesome minivan... too slow

Faults:

Nothing, but the spark plug wires shorting out.

General Comments:

Loved it, nobody believed that it was a 5 spd though... too slow. Had a great PIONEER deck in it with 2 10" subs and PIONEER 6X9s in the hatch, and PIONEERS in the dash... I also had four more speakers add in the back.
