1998 Plymouth Voyager

Summary:

This is a lemon of a vehicle

Faults:

I have already replaced the transmission twice and the transmission is faulty again.

I had to replace the air conditioning compressor this year.

General Comments:

I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.

I've had the same diagnosis as you this year. Mine has 112K on it, I replaced the transmission at 58K and it's out again. The compressor, I've been told, will cost $1,400 to replace on top of the $2,500 for the new transmission. I could find a good used car for almost $4,000...

Even though the van was out of warranty when the transmission blew the first time, I looked around on the internet and found some sites with instructions on how to get Chrysler to basically give you a new transmission the first time around. They know it sucks and they don't need the bad press. They gave me a rebuild, but I only ended up just paying for the labor to put it in. Saved me $2,100.

Aside from the transmission, though, most of my costs have been normal wear and tear sort of things (battery, belts, etc.). And if I set aside the total of two weeks I've had it in the shop over the last 7 years, it's been a decent vehicle for me overall.

1998 Plymouth Voyager 2.4

Summary:

This van has been the worst car I have ever owned and I will never buy from Chrysler again!

Faults:

The driver side and passenger side window seals leaked when we first got it. We took it back numerous times for the problem to be fixed. They still leak anytime it rains hard or we get it washed.

The front rack went at 40,000 miles.

The head gasket blew less than 500 miles out of warranty and Chrysler would only pay for half the cost.

The air conditioner went at 55,000 miles. We have since had 2 additional ones replaced.

The transmission went at 75,000 miles.

The power control module went at 80,000 miles.

The controls in the dash for the heating and air conditioning have had to be replaced.

The water pump was replaced at 40,000 miles.

General Comments:

I am starting to wonder if it is really lemon yellow under its purple paint.

I am quite disappointed in this van as Chrysler's dodge caravan has been rated so highly and this is under the same parent company.

This cars only good point is the dual sliding doors, and that it holds our four children.

Seats are uncomfortable for long trips.

1998 Plymouth Voyager 3.0

Faults:

Transmission Differential just blew and put a great big dent in the tranny housing. I had a 1992 Caravan LE that dropped the transmission as well. All the people I work with that had Chrysler Minivans of that year, also had to replace the transmission (6 people that I know of). I also own a 2000 Dodge Dakota that developed warped rotors at 39,000 Kilometers.

General Comments:

Daimler Chrysler will never get my business again when I get out of this unbearable set of expenses.

1998 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 6 cylinder

Summary:

It's the best car I've owned since my VW Squareback in 1973

Faults:

The front rotors gave and uneven, jerky stop when I got the van. The rotors were replaced.

I am used to doing common service on my vehicles; oil change, oil filter, air filter and plugs. The oil filter is tough to reach when not on a hoist; replacing the air filter is challenging at best.

The curvature of the rear window is greater than the wiper can sweep. The upper part is always missed.

General Comments:

My cars are always purchased used, nicely broken in at 80K miles. This Plymouth Voyager exceeds what I might have expected. I was amazed at the economy of operation. I just returned from a 2700 mile trip, almost all freeway driving at a steady 60-65.

I'm not a jackrabbit when I drive. Maybe that's why I got an honest 32.2 mpg on the trip.

1998 Plymouth Voyager 6 cylinder

Summary:

A great deal

Faults:

Brakes rusted out and had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This van has been great. Reliable, comfortable and dependable. Does not ride like a van.

The only complaint is gas mileage, it is not as economical as I thought it would be.

For better gas mileage, change spark plugs & wires often.

1998 Plymouth Voyager

Summary:

Good minivan

Faults:

Suspension.

Air conditioning belt/bracket.

Main problem is the transmission on highway, it feels like the transmission does not know if it should be on overdrive or 3th, really strange, the dealer doesn't know what`s wrong with the vehicle.

General Comments:

This vehicle needs more power.

1998 Plymouth Voyager

Summary:

Perfect for people with kids

Faults:

We have had no major problems. The air conditioner belt has broke twice in two days. And the air compressor is about to go out. But the dealer is replacing it at no charge.

General Comments:

I really like the van. It has plenty of space and is great when you have kids. The storage space in the back is big enough if traveling, for luggage or anything else.

1998 Plymouth Voyager 3.0 V6

Summary:

I've owned an earlier model of a Voyager and had many less problems

Faults:

Numerous electrical problems. Fortunately they occurred while still under warranty.

Problems with the ignition cylinder intermittently not recognizing the key. Just out of warranty, the ignition cylinder is completely non functional.

General Comments:

I doubt I'm the only one who has had this problem.

The only electrical problem that I had on my 98 Voyager was the radio. At 72,000, I started to leak a lot of oil near the rear main seal. The only connection to this that I can possibly make is that I did an oil change with synthetic oil... go figure this one out. Overall I would rate mine at a 6 only because I should have gone with the bigger engine. I have a 2.8 and it bogs down with 4 adults on the highway.
