1989 Pontiac 6000 LE 1.8 V6

Summary:

A good town car for the average person

Faults:

The car that I had before used up a lot of oil, that cost me a lot of money. I went on a trip far away and the car overheated, and cost me a lot of money to get it towed back.

General Comments:

This car has a lot of power and it handles really good. The interior is in perfect condition and I get many compliments on it. The hubcaps all came off but have been replaced. A tiny bit of rust but nothing major.

1989 Pontiac 6000 STE

Summary:

I wish I had two of them

Faults:

My automatic air leveling system failed.

It has needed 2 new alternators.

The wiring harness that goes through the fire wall was starting to abrade. I had the wiring problem fixed at the local dealer at a cost of $500.

General Comments:

I love the stereo controls on the steering wheel.

The cabin is very comfortable.

The all wheel drive works great.

1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD 3.1 V6 HO

Summary:

Great car, too bad they didn't make more!

Faults:

Had to replace rear disc calipers (2).

Replaced original muffler, water pump @ 100,000 miles.

General Comments:

Great car, bought it as we were going to start a family. Needed a safe, reliable car, and a type of car that could get us through any weather!

This car ended up being fantastic, features included auto-load leveling, rear compressor has a connection to inflate your own tires! The Pontiac emergency kit that came with it included; hose, pressure gauge (with attachments in to inflate other things such as beach balls, foot balls etc), raincoat, gloves, glow sticks, and even a window scraper!

This car has never let us down. The All-Wheel Drive has always served well, and the electronic all-wheel lock (for extreme emergencies.. ie snowed in due to street plowes) always got us through.

Features/Specs

Exterior came in red and blue only.. I got the red. Factory fog lights, day-time running lights (with automatic on/off sensors), four wheel discs with ABS, gold trim package, and premium gold/silver wheels.

Interior came in grey with a captains chairs, fully automatic, Delco ARS stereo-cassette with equalizer, electronic telescoping antenna (CD optional), leather tilt steering wheel (all stereo push button controls on wheel, including mute), cruise control, power windows etc..

1989 Pontiac 6000 STE AWD 3.1 HO

Summary:

A worthwhile restoration project

Faults:

Teves II hydraulic control.

4 calipers.

4 struts.

Tape transport.

Exhaust system with 40 series Flowmaster.

Hi-flow cat.

General Comments:

Read an article in C/D years back about this vehicle, too specialized and too expensive I thought, but without doubt a future collectible.

Ahead of its time.

I never forgot about this vehicle. One day I saw one in a parking lot, and left a note asking if it was for sale. The owner contacted me, told me the brake system was giving him major headaches, and agreed to sell it to me. It was now finished serving duty as a salesman's cross-country transport. As an added benefit, I received the complete maintenance record from when the car was new.

At the time I considered this an extremely rare find. I found out from the local Pontiac dealer that only 1700 were built between 88-90.

The Teves II ABS is a nightmare of complexity.

Any parts unique to AWD require diligent searching.

The vehicle is one of a handful with a 3.1L premium burning engine.

In my travels I have seen only two, one in Belle Plaine, MN, and one in Des Plaines. IL.

The Pontiac 6000 STE is truly one of the finest cars ever built. I now own a 1989 STE with AWD and I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's dark blue with the gold accents. Truly one of a kind. A very rare car. I traveled to Indianapolis to get mine... and I live in Maine! Only 60,000 miles and it's like a brand-new car!
