1986 Pontiac Fiero SE 2.8 V6

Summary:

This car is my first true love

Faults:

The only problems I've had with the car has been normal wear and tear.

I tried some performance up grades, but they didn't work out to well.

The plastic body panels force irregular paint fade.

General Comments:

This car is the most comfortable car I've ever driven.

It takes corners with ease, and forces you to drive faster.

I love how this car will not rust or dent.

1986 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8

Summary:

Very enjoyable experience

Faults:

Had to replace a Water Pump at 75k

Replaced Brakes When I bought it.

Seats need to be redone

Paint needs to be redone (fading)

Brakes are not the best in the world, need to really watch your distance between vehicles.

General Comments:

This car has been my daily commuter. It has been Extremely reliable for me.

Would have been nice to have a 3.4 in it, but that might be the next conversion I do. Compared to today's cars this car is very under powered.

1986 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8 normally aspirated V6

Summary:

A sporty bottomless money pit

Faults:

The distributer cap failed and needed replaced at 55,000 miles.

The catalytic converter was replaced at 55,000 miles.

The heater coil broke, causing anti-freeze to spill all over the passenger side floor and the car to over-heat. This happened at 62,500 miles.

The fuel pump fell apart in the gas tank as I was driving. This happened at 66,000 miles.

The head gasket cracked at 67,500 miles. This led to an average idle of 2000 RPM all the way up to a 4000 RPM idle.

The clutch went out at 71,000 miles.

General Comments:

I received this car as a graduation gift. Had I known that I would eventually put $5,000 into this poorly engineered machine, I would have said, "Thanks, but no thanks."

It is the least dependable car I've ever come in contact with. In less than the year that I owned this car, I had to have it towed four times! The first time I had to have it towed was the first day I had it!

However, it was very exciting to drive. It handled exceptionally well. There was very little roll in turns with the stock suspension.

The Fiero also has a decent amount of leg room considering its overall size. I'm 6'2" and I had plenty of room.

This car was doomed from the start. It was built with left over GM parts and many shortcuts were made to save money. The reason the Fiero was only produced for 4 years was because Pontiac couldn't afford to continue to pay for the warranty claims that were made by new Fiero owners.

Overall, I loved driving this car (When it wasn't broken down and in the garage.) However, I will never buy another Fiero (Or anything else GM for that matter) again.

We just recently bought an 86 Pontiac Fiero and we have not had any issues with it yet. Other than the need for more power, high performance parts or some remodeling we have been all set.

The car was so unique. If you did not realize and understand this fact when you bought the car then you had no business buying such a car. Quit complaining and enjoy this one and only for what is was. If you wanted a no consequence auto purchase, you should have bought a Toyota or a Honda.

1986 Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8

Summary:

A great bargain for the $800 price paid

Faults:

A few cracks in the dashboard from heat.

Nothing serious yet.

Just regular maintenance like plugs, filter, and oil.

Brake light stays on along with a some type of warning beep for what I don't know.

Has a bit of a weird idle when started cold like when its first started it acts like it almost dies then gets the RPM back up and then just has an off idle.

General Comments:

Steering gets shaky sometimes at higher speeds, not sure what the problem is. I will take in for balancing and alignment to see if that fixes it.

It is a very quick and reliable car so far which is what counts.

May be uncomfortable for people over or around six feet tall.

A/C works great.

Doesn't have any cooling problems.

The steering sometimes becomes shaky at high speeds on Fieros because the front end starts to lift up a little bit. At about 90mph, I found it to start happening.

Someone I know uses sand bags in the front end to weigh it down.

I put sandbags in the front of my delorean in the winter; works great. I would recommend doing the same.
