1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.3 DOHC

Summary:

Get a grand am if you like to sit on the shoulder

Faults:

There were many problems with this car.

I went threw three alternators.

The water pump sprung a leak.

I had to get two new radiators.

The car constantly overheated and yet no shop or even the dealer could fix the problem. It seemed to be a mystery to why it was overheating. The car was constanly in the shop and leaving me on the side of the road. I also had to rebuild the transmission at 70,000 miles. The brakes on this car were also horrible. It seemed like I replaced the pads almost every month.

General Comments:

I treated this car very good and never abused it. This is a good car to stay away from. My girlfriend has a 97 which also had major problems and my friend had a 95 like mine and he got rid of his for the same reasons.

Has anybody tried replacing the thermostat.

1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.1L V6

Summary:

Very reliable family transportation

Faults:

After 6 years the battery went bad in the driveway of our house. Hey, 6 years is pretty good.

After 77,000 trouble free miles in which it out lasted the 5 year payment book, the water pump discharge fitting sprung a leak. A tow paid for by my insurance company, a $15 part and most of a Saturday put us back on the road again.

I have yet to replace the front brakes. I have done the rear but, I could have let them go for a while. I had the drums off during tire rotation and figured what the heck.

General Comments:

This has been the MOST reliable car I have ever experienced or even heard of. From reading the comments of others it seems some are really good and some are junk. I feel very fortunate to have my family in such a reliable vehicle. Taking reasonable care of it and treating it gently helps I'm sure.

1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 cylinder

Summary:

Nice, reliable, and handles well

Faults:

Only one thing has gone wrong with the car... the left turn signal lamp blew.

General Comments:

The car is pretty reliable, it does its purpose.

I have gone to Las Vegas about 3 times without trouble... and I live in Seattle.

Today I'm having my engine tuned up, and that's about all the service I've done to the car.

1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1L V6

Summary:

This car is a trusty, reliable workhorse that is fun to drive

Faults:

Alternator replaced once under warranty and once at my expense.

Car has a slow oil consumption problem. Internal leak somewhere (not bad after so many miles).

Both power windows have required servicing.

General Comments:

This has been a great car. Reliable, cheap on gas and decent performance. I have over 125K miles on it and it still runs like new.

The only real problem is a slow oil leak somewhere inside the engine that requires a quart or so every now and then.

Bottom line: I would buy another one without hesitation.

The Problem With the oil is not a leak. The problem is that it is burning oil. I own one myself, and love it. but it has tendency to burn oil to fast. It's a problem with the cadilidic converter, overheating.

I have the same car and it has been a good one. However you may have a dying intake manifold gasket, which can cause loss of oil as well. Mine has began to leak oil and my mechanic just pointed out I need another one. I have about the same mileage as you do, so if you have never had it done, see about getting it done. My mechanic said it will cost about $400 but that fixing it now will keep it from becoming a $1000 problem down the road.

However I think the previous comment bears looking into as well. You could be burning oil, or a combination of these. But I do suggest you have your mechanic look at the manifold too to see if it needs replaced.
