I am very disappointed in Pontiac
I bought my 1995 Pontiac Grand Am in 2003, and it ran beautiful when I first bought it used.
After 4 months I had to replace the battery, the starter, the gas gauge reads wrong (never know how much gas I have) and now the power windows don't work.
I would hate to put anymore money into this car. What can I do?

Crap
We bought a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am in the summer of 2006. It ran great for the first 5,000 miles. The first thing that went wrong was the left blinker light, and was an electrical problem. We then got the car inspected, and put about $800 into it so it would pass. After that it started to overheat, so we changed the heater core and thermostat. It ran great for about 2 months, and now it appears the head gasket has blown. Also, the driver side window is broken and will not go up and down.
This car is a piece of crap. I don't recommend anything buying this vehicle. There should be a recall on it!!

Great, low cost and reliable car (if maintained properly and regularly)
Turn signal flasher likes to burn out ($4 part).
Muffler hanger finally rusted out (original... fixed with a good old wire coat hanger).
Recent cold snap (-35C) led to AC/heater knob snapping on inner shaft (easy fix).
Pro's:
- great on gas
- good power, lots of torque
- stylish (nicest GA made, in my opinion)
- Reliable, has never left me stranded... will start in -30C weather even if not plugged in (synthetic oil helps too).
- factory fog lights are a nice touch
-good interior and trunk space.
Con's:
- interior squeaks and rattles
- seats take getting used to (not the most comfortable, and are very low)
Bought it on a returned lease in 1996, regular maintenance done, 11 years later still running strong! Will be sorry when it goes, its been a great car!

I agree it's the best looking Grand Am made. I always thought they looked sharp when they were new.
I have a 95 Grand am, I have had it for since 1998, It has 217,000 miles on it. It is a 5 speed man. quad 4, I have had a few minor problems, no a/c for a long time, knobs have broken off, currently I am in the process of changing the heater coil, it has been leaking and overheating some, The rattle in your dash can be fixed with a screw driver,pop off the little oblong looking tabs in the corner if your dash and tighten, the problem will go away, for a awhile. I love my car, It has the original clutch, I change the battery every 5 years, one alternator. My car did that high excessive speeding for awhile, the mechanic said it was a vacuum hose, all my censers are all slowly going, but other than that, nothing major, good luck with your car.
Basic transportation
Intake gasket before I purchased it.
Windows don't work.
Shaky and noisy.
Bought this car with 265,000 miles on it with the original motor. I purchased it knowing the intake gasket was bad so I replaced it. total cost with me doing the work $65 and I paid $25 for the car. I also flushed the motor and gave her a tune up. Runs awsome and smooth with lots of power. The ball joint s, tierod ends and half shafts were replaced 2,000 miles before I picked the car up. There is nothing wrong with the car that you can't expect form any car with this many miles on it. It starts runs and handles great what more could you ask for $25. I have no regrets buying this car.
While on the subject of engine work I have been seeing a lot of complaints about blown head gaskets. I am not shure about the Quad four, but as far as the v6 goes they have a intake gasket problem where they blow out into the lifter valley and BAM you have water in your oil. Most folks would see a head gasket problem and overlook the intake gasket while they tear down the engine because you have to replace it anyway, but you usually don't need to replace the head gasket just the intake. It is true that if you drive the car with an intake gasket leak it will eventually cause a blown head gasket because of the insane heat cycles. Take care of your car and fix problems before they lead to other problems. Intake gaskets are easy and I would buy another car with a bad one if it's a deal.
It has the original paint with no rust, but lots of dents. The interior is shot, but everything works except the windows can't complain.

I absolutely LOVE my 2001 Grand Am. In 60,000 miles absolutely NOTHING has gone wrong with it. I traded a 5.0 Mustang for it and have never regretted it. The Grand Am rides better, handles great, and gets TWICE the gas mileage.
Mine has a power height adjustment on the driver's seat, but it is both a blessing AND a curse. If I set it high enough to be comfortable, I bump my head getting into it!! I guess you can't have everything!! Thanks for your review and lots of luck to you on your Grand Am.
