1998 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1L V6

Summary:

Good buy, great car!

Faults:

Passenger side window regulator needed replacement, it cost about $500.

General Comments:

This car is a good buy for anyone who is looking for a quick, sporty, somewhat economic vehicle.

3.1L V6 not to be under estimated, it's a little powerhouse.

I own the 2 door GT, bright red, it is most definitely an eye catcher.

The dual exhaust and rear spoiler add to the sporty design.

I have a little black Grand AM GT. It has a kick, the acceleration is a lot to handle, but it's fun. Just don't mistake it for an off-road vehicle.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 2.4 liter 4 cylinder.

Summary:

I love this car, I just wish Pontiac would take care of the little flaws.

Faults:

The black paint between the door windows and the rear side windows (it's a coupe) is chipping and peeling.

The window regulator broke. You have to buy a motor/regulator assembly that costs somewhere around $200.

The power driver's seat doesn't work right. Motor works, but doesn't move the seat.

The volume on the radio gets a little louder when you first try to turn it down.

Water has leaked into one of the headlights.

The key-less entry remote stopped working. (It wasn't just the battery--I had to buy a new one.)

The same things seem to happen to a lot of these cars. Why doesn't Pontiac recall them?

General Comments:

I like this car because I have always liked Grand Ams. This one seems to be a pretty good car, it just suffers from poor manufacturing quality.

The 2.4 liter has great power for a 4cyl. and gets good gas mileage.

The car handles well and rides nicely.

I couldn't stand the BF Goodrich Touring T/A's that came with the car. They were incredibly loud on all surfaces. New tires made a huge difference.

The seats are comfortable, and I like the color of the instrument panel lights at night.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4

Summary:

A lot of bang for your buck

Faults:

Previous to me owning the car, it developed a transmission leak. The repair was covered by the warranty and repaired at the dealer.

I haven't owned the car for a long time, but at 56000 it is in superb condition.

There was a period right after I bought it that the Anti-Lock brake light would come on after going over speed bumps. In conjunction the Enhanced Traction light would come on as well. It turned out to be just a loose wheel sensor. The problem has not reoccurred.

General Comments:

The car is fun to drive.

The suspension is great around corners.

Acceleration for a four cylinder engine is impressive.

Very comfortable ride.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am GT V6

Summary:

A real lemon

The motors in the automatic windows had to be replaced so the window would go up completely.

The gas cap had to be replaced so it would fit tightly.

The transmission began to go out at 60,000 miles.

The key would only fit in the lock on the passenger's side door.

The brakes started to studder at 58,000 miles.

The starter went out at 56,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car has had one problem after another.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.1 V6

Summary:

Good reliable performance

Faults:

Recently the driver's window would not open, but a bit of playing with the switch appears to have fixed this.

Check Engine light comes on for a day whenever the temperature suddenly changes, but always goes off the next day.

Brakes including rotors replaced once, and alignment adjusted at 80,000 KM.

Recently the bracket holding the muffler went missing, and I am about to install the $12.00 replacement.

Radio readout goes erratic at times, but radio continues to work.

General Comments:

Used mainly for highway driving, 200 km return to work.

Change oil every 13000 km.

No significant repairs to date.

I own a 1994 Grand Am with 245,000 KM that has had few repairs, as did the Pontiac 6000 that I kept 8 years for 240,000 km.

I am happy enough with the three Pontiacs that I had that I have now purchased a Pontiac Aztek, my RETIREMENT vehicle.
