1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.0

Summary:

Somewhat reliable, but needs a lot of maintenance to stay a bit reliable

Faults:

Basically everything. Transmission, gasket, all security lights, check engine, ABS out, gas reader out. Replaced struts, headlights, taillights, from light is half-way falling out, and my taillight hangs freely. Car is automatic, but as it "automatically" shifts into gear, the whole car pulls as if dying. When I shift into reverse or whatever, the whole car jumps and if you look under the hood while someone shifts into gear, seems as if the motor jumps trying to get out. Side mirrors have both fallen off, the A/C doesn't work, the inner console turns off at times, and my electrical just dies at times. I have decided to just keep this car until its end and I will then happily find another car, which means, no more money out of my pocket for this piece of junk:)

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4

Summary:

Pontiac could have done better.

Faults:

The dealer fixed the head gasket leak before we purchased it.

The sunroof stopped working two days after we purchased it, but they would not repair it as it was not under warranty.

The door upholstery was coming up in the corners on both doors. I used contact cement to glue it back down.

I fixed a broken plastic bracket for one of the driving lights.

The engine sputters some times at start-up.

I am currently taking a break from the garage where I'm replacing the pulley on the power steering pump.

General Comments:

The car looks and rides nice, but I wish I had read this site before buying the car last month for my daughter. She needs a dependable car for going to college, but I can see where it's going to be a money pit.

I've always been a General Motors person, but I'm doubtful that my next vehicle will be one.

Oh, and I got my first insurance bill. This 1999 Grand AM GT has higher premiums than my wife's 2002 Chrysler Sebring convertible LTD. When I asked why, my agent said it was because they classified the GT as a sport's car. I told them it was a pretty poor example of a sports car.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 Ram-air High Output

Summary:

Very sporty and fast, will buy The G6 Replacement!

Faults:

One Wheel bearing at 100k

General Comments:

I love this car, contrary to others comments about this, I have NEVER had anything that's "common" break on this car, never had the Resistor, Lower intake gasket, peeling interior, fogged lights, or anything that's a common fix. My Brakes work fine both front and rears, no coolant leaks, all my controls work fine, not wearing tire fast or anything, still feels like a new car to me. and its got 108,000 MILES!!! Very Sporty, I like the performance for a v6.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE

Summary:

This car was good for the first 100,000 miles, but after that it should have been pushed off a cliff

Faults:

Okay, my mom bought this car when I was in 7th grade and we've had it ever since. I was sharing a 91 toyota Camry with my 2 other siblings, then my parents bought 2 new cars and gave us their old ones. I got the "newer" Pontiac with 109,000+ miles for my freshman year of college. So, I've had the car for 5 weeks and only driven it 2x. It has gone through 2 alternators, a transmission, a coil, and now the mechanic doesn't know why it's not running. I got a tune up about 2 days ago praying that it would help it stop missing. but that wasn't the case. I got the car home and it died in the driveway. the check engine light is constantly on, the ABS light stays on, and the TRAC light is constantly blinking. I'm about to give up on the car and send it to the scrap heap.

General Comments:

It handles really nice now that I have new ball joints! I wish the steering was just a little tighter. The cabin is a nice shade of tan to offset the cherry red exterior. if anyone has one of these cars, you'll know that the hubcaps (if you have them) sound HORRIBLE! I really suggest getting rims. I live in a nice city that has a LOT of brick roads and you can hear my car from a mile away.

It sounds like your mechanic does not have a clue what he is doing. Diagnosing why a car is not running is a piece of cake. It is when the cars start running improperly, particularly on an intermittent basis, that difficulties can arise. My guess is the car did not even most or even any of the components the mechanic replaced. I would get a new mechanic, quickly.
