1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT V6

The car is sporty, just what I was looking for

Faults:

I bought the car used July 24,2003. It was a birthday present to myself. The car is a black 2 door Pontiac Grand AM GT that I love. It makes me look COOL! I bought it with 54K miles on it. I am grateful to the dealer to tell me about the extended warranty. This was my first car that I had bought. All others were gifts from my parents. But.. I have had the following problems

1) water pump replaced

2) the needle to show the amt of gas replaced

3) transmission rebuilt

4) motor!!!

5) fuel pump and filter

And to the commets about coolant leaking. I had that problem that lead to having to get a motor. 1-3 were covered by my extended warranty, but 4 and 5 are covered by my parent and me. Grateful to have an experienced mechanic that is my uncle in the family. Yeah, the knob for my radio does not function well, but that is small stuff I am not sweating that. I can just use the controllers that are on the steering wheel. After all of that I love my car and it will be paid for in December '06!!

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L

Summary:

I couldn't have done the last three years of my life without her

Faults:

Fuel pump went @ 60,000 miles.

Air conditioner currently doesn't work (awaiting repair)

Horn currently doesn't work (awaiting repair)

Annoying clicking from hazard relay switch (awaiting repair)

Alternator pulley squeaks.

General Comments:

This car is excellent and has served me well over the last three years through 120 mile a day commutes in the hot summer weather as well as the cold winter months. The only real problem was the fuel pump going, which cost $650 to replace. Her security interlock system is also a bit finicky at times, though this is few and far between. Surprisingly for me at least my '99 seems to have none of the mechanical problems reported in the later model years. She does occasionally run hot while idling, but never to the point of overheating. All in all, an excellent and fun car.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4

Summary:

I wish I would've researched this car before buying it

Faults:

Blower Switch replaced 2 times.

Battery and Alt. replaced 1 time.

Brake Pads and Roters 3 times.

Intake Manifold replaced 1 time.

Turn signal switch replaced 2 times.

Horrible grinding or rubbing sound coming from front wheels.

Sunroof opens all the way when it wants to.

General Comments:

This car is a beautiful red car, but at 98,000 miles, it is literally falling apart.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

1999 Pontiac Grand Am base model

Summary:

This car is okay

Faults:

The first thing that I noticed was the pulsating. It didn't seem to affect the braking nor the steering. I spoke with a mechanic at work and he advised me to have the rotors turned.

Then recently the front end started making this awful grinding growly noise. I had just bought tires from Les Shwab so I took it back and had them look at it. The told me someone had put the brake pads on backwards.

I had them do the brake job and that's when they found that I needed the front wheel hub assembly replaced. That will cost me $316 dollars. I did buy an extended warranty when I bought the car, but it has a $250 deductible so I might as well have Les Shwab take care of it and know that it will be done right.

Thanks to this forum, I will have them put the Shims in the brakes too so that the pulsing doesn't return. I will have them do that when I have the hubs replaced.

Other small things about the car, the fabric is separating from the rear door panels and the rug liner in the trunk has also pulled away from the body. Also the volume control on the radio is temperamental.

I have also had the problem of the car not starting because of its internal security feature. I have solved that problem. When it happens I take the key and put it in the lock on the driver's side door. Then I lock and unlock the door. Try it with the door closed. That seems to take care of the problem. I found that little trick by accident when I had Jiffy Lube change the oil and it wouldn't start.

It's only happened on other time when my girlfriend was going to take the car to work and it wouldn't start for her.

General Comments:

Well, I am glad that I found this site. Thanks to all of you perhaps the next couple of years will be fairly easy. We shall see. Definitely getting rid of the car soon.
