1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE2 6 cylinder
Summary:
Poor quality
Faults:
Brake Light stayed on due to button under pedal sticking out of the showroom, covered under warranty.
Terrible vibration at 45 mph+ led to replacing all 4 tires at 8000 miles under warranty.
Air conditioning fan at low speed (1,2) went out and was replaced under warranty.
Cassette tape unit failed at 12000 miles and was replaced under warranty.
Rotors turned at 35000 miles, covered under warranty.
Driver's side mirror separated and almost fell off at 40000 miles, reglued by owner.
Battery failed at 3.5 years, cost $100 to replace.
Radio/Stereo display was flaky, showing correct data then blacking out or showing gibberish, never repaired.
Alternator went out at 63000 miles, repaired costing $650.
Even after the tires were replaced, the car had a pronounced vibration/thumping when traveling faster than 65 mph, never fixed.
General Comments:
This car had too any problems, and was unacceptable in quality, even though it was the first year of the new model when I bought it.
The final straw came when the alternator went out on the expressway. Interestingly enough, this was at 6 years and 1 week after purchase, so if I had bought an extended warranty (which I hadn't), it would have expired and the alternator would not have been covered. The good news is, this was the only repair that cost me, all the others were covered under warranty (within 3 years), I fixed them myself, or I didn't fix them at all.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Amen brother! Nothing but trouble. ABS Light/Traction Light stays on. Might be a speed sensor? I replaced the Lower intake manifold gaskets myself and saved $350.00. But it wasn't easy! Power steering hose blew off at around 40,000 miles on mine. Passenger side mirror is going to be replaced as well. Not to mention a new alternator at 60,000 miles. And of course the trademark of the Grand Am - water in the backup light housing...
