1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4

Summary:

Woo Hoo! I Love it!

Faults:

Intake Manifold Leak.

Fan Resistor.

General Comments:

I have a 1999 GAGT with 72,000 on it. Wonderful car! My 3rd GA. First- a 1986-finally went at 280,000 miles- the 2nd a 1992, at 254,000- and even then- just the fuel pump (the original) - but wanted a newer one... so a 1999 it was- bought in 2001. I bought it used at 26,000. Other than the exhaust manifold leaking (warranty) - the car has been excellent! I DID replace the fan resistor ($15) and 30 minutes of my time- AND- I did have a battery Post Come off (HAd NEVER had that happen- under Warranty- a Delco Battery- tightened too tightly, probably by the guy mentioned below) - otherwise- an excellent- fast car. As far as Rotors/Brakes go- expect about every 20-25,000 miles to replace- depending on a thing called "DRIVING CONDITIONS." Anyone who has owned ANY car- that is about how long they SHOULD last. If you are driving on more mileage than that with brakes that old/used- shame on you!

I want to do a few mods- intake- etc. A previous poster mentioned the RAM AIR does little- Ahem... No flaming allowed in here. But- he would not be working on my car- if it ever needed it.

I will have another, please!

Plus- 'Honda Boys' with their Girlfriends HATE GA's! Never lost to their Moddies yet!

Hint- Splurge on Leather next time! SWEET!

1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 V6

Summary:

Extremely reliable and quick, handles like an expensive sports roadster

Faults:

Brake disc's are warn causing bad vibration.

Radio volume goes up before down when turning it down.

Very slight coolant leak.

General Comments:

I bought the car when it had done 92,000 miles and have done 14,000 since with very little problems. I drove coast to coast twice in 3 months!

The problems it does have are hardly surprising considering the high mileage.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.4 Liter V6

Summary:

An expensive lemon

Faults:

My intake gasket blew at 40,000. Which is very expensive to fix and a very common problem.

Brake pads every 20,000.

Water pump at 95,000.

Alternator at 85,000.

Power drivers seat at 40,000.

Hubcaps rattled ever since I owned the car.

Drivers side power window broke at 90,000.

General Comments:

This car drives and handles great very responsive.

Too many problems with the Grand Am though too much money for repairs. Wouldn't buy another one.

Comfortable to ride in though and very nice design. Sharp car.

Wouldn't recommend this car though.

If you keep up with this car it will run forever.

Mine has 91000 on it and I have not had any major problems,

The car I had before it was a Toyota and the one before that was a Honda, they both sucked a lemon, the engine went bad after owning the Toyota for four months, The Honda only liked to make noise and show no power. the grand am is not the most fast on the road, but you can pass with out being scared to make it before a nother car comes on the other side. Ilove my grand am, it has only a 2.4dohc and it will smoke a Honda.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am SE 3.4

Summary:

Good car for the money

Faults:

Replaced water pump at 57.9k

Replaced rotors and pads with slotted at 57.9k. Feels much better.

Power seat is starting to have trouble.

Fan blower does not work on 2 setting.

General Comments:

The car is excellent in wet/snow conditions. The 3.4 has a lot of power. Interior is comfortable.

Cost of repairs if you can do it yourself, water pump $21,slotted rotors and pads $100.

Aside from the brakes and pump the car has been very reliable, it has not left me stranded. Cost of ownership is low.

Update on 99 grandam

The car has 99500 mile now, at 75000 miles I replaced the lower intake manifold gasket for $300 plus, a wheel bearing went bad and cost $300, now the fuel gauge is having problems it shows full when it gets to under a 1/4 tank. The car still handles, looks and feels like new. In 4 years I put around $1100 in repairs. Other than that it's been very good.

Feb 2007 and I still have it, my wife loves the car. It has 138,000 miles and still as responsive as when I bought it. I feel it was well worth the money if it were to die today. It has never broken down on us and left us stuck. Although it has had it share of problems, some problem though were from the mechanic not being good. The engine does not leak or burn any oil. The paint and the body still looks new. I hope we will get more years from it. I had some minor problems listed, but have not had any since.
