2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4L with Ram Air

Summary:

I love it!

Faults:

Had to have the fuel pump replaced.

Clicking noise in the car on the passenger side when turning the brights on and off. Haven't figured out where it's coming from yet.

Coolant leaks--no problems yet. Have to pour more in every few months.

The 'change oil' light comes on every 1,000 miles after I get the oil changed.

My brakes vibrate and I've had the rotors turned once, but I'm pretty hard on the brakes so I'm not blaming it on the manufacturer.

General Comments:

I walked onto the dealership lot and immediately fell in love with the car I bought last year (2003). It had 36,000 miles on it and has gained a lot more with all the trips I make back and forth to Florida from Indiana.

The only major thing I've had wrong with the car is the fuel pump went out around 50,000 miles, which I kind of expected because most cars have something go wrong with them around that time.

This car has been in four car accidents, none of which were my fault--honest! One in which it was almost totaled when rear-ended a month after I bought it. I've had no problems with it even after all that.

All in all, I love my car and a lot of heads turn when I drive by--could be because I've fixed it up quite a bit...

Just a guess. But I think that clicking noise you hear when you turn the brights on or off is the fog lights turning on and off. Not a 100% sure, but I think that is the issue. Because if you just turn the fog lights on and off from the switch you get the same noise.

Summary:

A Beautiful Looking Nightmare

Faults:

My engine leaks antifreeze constantly.

Wheel Bearings need replacing every year.

Vehicle does not age well.

Blinkers occasionally stop working, then with a restart of vehicle start working again.

Service vehicle soon lights are always coming on and off.

General Comments:

I have had my Grand AM GT for about 1 year. I purchased it used with 62,000 miles on it. When I purchased the vehicle it was in beautiful shape. The interior and exterior were immaculate. Sure, the mileage was high, but the price was right. I purchased it from a dealer.

Immediately one month after I purchased the car I had a slow anti-freeze leak coming from the gasket area. Also, the wheel bearings on both front wheels went bad. Shortly after I noticed my radio display would scramble repeatedly and would all of a sudden fix itself. Next, my horn stopped working. Next in line are my blinkers, one day they work, the next day they dont.

Also, I have an automatic transmission, but the vehicle seems to shift very hard. Not a smooth operating machine, that's for sure.

Now, after owning the vehicle for about a year I have the "Service Vehicle Soon", "ABS" and "Track off" lights on.

I am dreading to take it to the dealer; everything on this vehicle is at least $500 to fix. It's a nightmare.

Have you been able to fix the ABS, service and "Track Off" lights yet? I've been dealing with this problem for months, and have replaced the wheel-speed sensor three times to try and correct it. I would be interested to know if you solved this problem.

Have a 99 GT. Many of same problems. Wheel Bearings always an issue with these vehicles. POOR design. I had the same issues wuth the lights. It was related to a bad battery and weak alternator. I never would have known.

To treat your hard shifting problems, switch to synthetic transmission fluid, that should fix the problem. That's what did it for mine.

I love my Grand Am I learned to drive on one and I love the way it drives. Although I have had many crazy problems with it. Ball Bearings in the front, Radio does not work, last year a piece in my door broke and I couldn't buy it because they didn't make the part by itself, I had to buy it in a kit. Over all The fixes are very expensive on my car, because everything is special. Even changing the belt cost me tons of money because the motor mount has to be taken out. I read all the coment's and I have had similar problems.
