2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4

Summary:

Has not cost me a ton yet

Faults:

Reading over all the comments about the Grand Am I thought I would add a few. I bought my Grand Am new and have started to have problems around 45,000 miles. First, my braking system has been acting up for about 13,000 miles. I started hearing grinding noise and brought the car in. Replaced the brakes. Did not help. Brought it in again and they adjusted the brakes. Nothing seemed to help. They gave up on me. Then I started to have the pulsating feeling from the entire front end. I thought the wheels, rods, axle was going to fall off.

Since reading comments it seems as though other people are having the same problem. Also, about 5,000 miles ago, my car is having trouble starting. In the morning it starts fine, but after that it takes a few cranks and a push on the accelerator to get it going.

Any ideas on that? I thought maybe a fuel filter replacement. I was also told maybe a bad oxygen sensor. Please help.

You can e-mail me at rjs2121@yahoo.com.

Thanks!!!

Grand Am GT's have terrible rotors. Two months after I bought the car, I realized this, replaced them with some Powerslot Rotors from www.pfyc.com and never had the problem again. The only other thing I've found is that it occasionally leaks coolant, but my Low Coolant light has never come on and it never overheats. Puzzling... anyway, IMHO, the Grand Am GT is a great car, good power for the price, and has lots of nice features.

Summary:

High performance, affordable price

Faults:

When I first got my car the brakes needed to be replaced and that is the only problem I have ever had.

General Comments:

This car is amazing, I can pass on the highway like nothing. It is definitely not short of power and handles amazingly. The 6 way power seat is very handy especially for long trips. My next car will be another Grand Am GT.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L

Summary:

Great car for the price

Faults:

Replaced fuel pressure regulator @60,000 miles.

Replaced fuel pump @80,000 miles.

Replaced brakes @30,000 mile intervals due to extreme wear. (brakes real hard)

Replaced rear speakers, both were blown @40,000 miles. (poor quality rear speakers)

General Comments:

Over all this car performs and handles great! I have been really happy with this car, aside from problems listed above general maintenence at routine intervals has kept this car performing like new.

Things to improve: noisy cabin-road noise is audible at cruising speed. Seats could also be a little more comfortable.

Well as far as your problems with your 4 cylinder engine you should have researched the car more carefully. Anyone who know anything about GM Cars knows that the Quad 4 engine is one of the great blunders of GM 4 cylinders. Yes they make great power for a 4 cylinder, but have had bad reliability for years. You would be much better off with the 3.4 6 cylinder which gets about the same gas mileage and has more power. Yes you may have to change the intake gaskets once in the cars lifetime, but other than that the engine is rock solid. GM also has a new design gasket out that won't have to be changed ever again. I have changed lots being a mechanic and have never done one twice on the same car. I also think if you are having a problem with the seat that you are probably a little bigger than you are leading on. That is unheard of to have a seat break twice.

Summary:

A good deal if the little things don't bother you that much

Faults:

Turn signals short out and don't work at times.

Trunk release stuck, cannot use remote trunk button or button on keyless entry remote.

Brakes grind in the rain.

When on the highway using cruise and needing to stop, car has a hard time shifting down when attempting to stop.

General Comments:

I've only had this car for a week and I am rather disappointed in the electrical systems of the car.

Look wise it is very sporty, it is fast, accelerates nicely and handles well.

If I can keep the car running, I will be happy with it.

So far (thankfully) no engine problems yet.

Does anyone else have problems like this with this car?

I don't own a Grand Am GT (yet), but I do own a '99 Pontiac Firebird, and I have had several electrical issues with the car.

I think it's just in Pontiac nature to have problems with electrical options...
