2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4 V6

Summary:

Great starter car at a great price!

Faults:

The only problems that I have had with my car so far. knock on wood! I had to take it in and get the Front Rotors replaced right at 34000 miles. It was making a god awful grinding noise in the front when the brake was applied. It was under the recall so fortunately I did not have to pay for it out of pocket.

But it is getting around that mileage where it may need it again. My point is if you just simply take care of your car it should stay fairly reliable.

General Comments:

The performance is not what I thought it would be. But let me assure you that in its class it is up there with the big boys and in most cases on the top.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.4L V6

Summary:

Great car, but take it to your mechanic before you buy it

Faults:

The left front tire makes a grinding noise which sounds like the brake pads against the rotors. However, this only happens at low speeds.

General Comments:

Overall I love the car. The only thing is I wish that Pontiac would do something about the tires. I have the Goodyear RSA tires and have been told that they are to blame for the noise. I pulled the tires myself to check the rotors and pads for excessive wear, and saw that everything was OK. Also I've noticed that when driving in the rain, the noise goes away. I'm wondering if anyone out there has had better luck with another brand of tires. I've gone as far as contacting Goodyear about the problem, and their only suggestion was to buy tires of another brand.

Another thing I would like to state is that I've read several reviews, each complaining about the tires and the performance of the car. I have to say that number one to spin the tires, you have to turn the traction control off. (DUH!) As for the performance, if you don't like the fact that the motor has a governor in it, you can go to the dealership and request that they put a performance chip in the computer and reprogram it. I did this and now the car will bury the speedometer without even breaking a sweat. Not to mention that I've run in the high 11's in the quarter mile.

I own a 1999 Grand Am GT Sedan and I have the same exact problem and I mean down to the T!!I have been trying to figure out the problem for months now and needless to say it has been very aggravating!!

How can you be running high 11's in the quarter mile? You must not have the factory engine at those speeds. 15 seconds is the best you'll get out of the stock engine.

I have a 2002 Grand AM GT and I have the exact same problem! GM went as far as replacing the front two tires for me because my car is still under warranty.

I had the brake pads changed and the rotors, still the noise!

I have another opinon that I am checking on next week... it could be the speedometer making the noise. I am checking that and I'll get back with the results!

Such a pain!!!

I just bought a 2000 Pontiac Grand am and had the same problem. When I took it in under warranty they pulled it apart and noticed brake dust on the rotors. That fixed the annoying rubbing noise. Another problem I have been having is the power locks don't lock the door on the remote or the switch.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT

Summary:

Bad Brakes

Faults:

Brake pads need to be replaced

Needs new rotors.

General Comments:

I am very dissatisfied with my brakes. My bakes began grinding at 16K miles. Now at 20K I need new front brake pads and rotors. When I brought it in for a check up the Pontiac dealership claimed that they did not hear any grinding and that there was nothing wrong with my car. Now they are saying that my brake pads are 80% worn. I do not feel that this is normal and I don't feel that I should have to pay anywhere from $250 to $500 for the repairs. Very unhappy.

Hi

I have a 2000 GA SE1. I put new brakes on at 40k (original brakes) and again 10 thousand miles later because the calipers were not returning all the way so the first bill was 600.00 and the second was 400.00+. So now I am going to just buy new rotors due to the warping and the garage having to regrind them over and over. I found a site lmperformance with front slot rotors for 179.95.

Good Luck to you.
