2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT 2.4L, V6

Summary:

Pontiac: stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Faults:

Bought my 2000 GT Sdn 2.4L V6 as a lease turn-in in 2002 at 45K. Now 132K. Lived 7miles from work for three years then moved 40miles from work, so most of miles are highway since mid-'05. I get oil changed every 3k-5k. All other repairs below have been done as necessary.

1. AC/heat fan blower works on 3 or higher. But even when "off" can still feel hot or cold air slightly. AC very cold (too cold on 3) even when 90F+. Heat okay, but takes forever to warm up.

2. Lighter has never worked.

3. Put new tires on summer 2002 right after purchase: $525. Put two new front tires on December 2004: $230. Put four new tires on last month: $480. Had a few used tires in the interim.

4. Brake pads, 12/04. Rotors and brake pads, summer 2007.

5. PwrSteer leak 12/04...I think that one was around $300.

6. At 90k started idling rough. Tune up was around $450.

7. New battery 2004 and again two weeks ago.

8. Power windows: driver's side fell down into door winter 2004-05, passenger windows both repaired 2005. Driver's window is acting up again and keep coming off track slightly, and one passenger window (not fixed before) isn't working at all.

9. Slight coolant leak (external) fixed 2006. Bad coolant leak (internal) at intake valve required new head gasket just fixed $600, with new plugs, rings and oil change.

10. Had the signal problem, but dealer fixed as part of recall.

11. Headlamps both replaced. Now I have to have the covers repaired due to oxidization and pitting; I can barely see one car length at night.

General Comments:

Nice, tight steering handles extremely well. Sits low and wide and holds the road beautifully. Looks great; if only the thing wasn't such a maintenance nightmare. This is my second Pontiac--I had a Sunbird, then Intrepid, now Grand Am. Sunbird and Dodge Intrepid were both in the shop constantly.

I can't fathom why the reviewer wouldn't like this car. Every "repair" mentioned is routine maintenance except for the coolant leak and windows (caused by slamming doors violently). Does he expect tires, batteries and headlights to last forever??

My 2001 Grand Am has been the best car I've ever owned. I've yet to have one single repair done on it. It even has the original brake pads. I did install a set of 215:60 Khumo radials recently to enhance the traction and performance, but tires do wear out occasionally. At 132,000 miles most domestics are on their 3rd set of tires, and most imports are on their 3rd engine and transmission.

OK.

I give you the powers windows falling in (was the car in an accident previously?) and maybe the head gasket replacement (depending on how hard you drive it and the coolant you used), but the rest is normal maintenance on a 9 going on 10 year old car!

The rest of what you list is normal maintenance stuff!

Batteries, plugs, tune-ups for rough idle, little leaks, etc..

Get real!!!

You bought a three year old off-lease car. Someone who is leasing a car is not going to drive it around like grandma!

Put your big-boy pants on and stop bashing Pontiac for problems on a ten year old car. Those things will happen to any car! Geeesshhh!

2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6

Summary:

Very expensive to maintain

Faults:

Brakes have gone quick on our Grand am too. We finally got sick of it and bought brakes and rotors with a lifetime warranty. We replace them AT LEAST 2-3 times a year. at least they are free now.

At 120,000 miles our intake gasket went. We were going through about a gallon of antifreeze a week until we fixed it. It cost $1300. I guess this is very common in this car. So common, that our mechanic new what was wrong before even looking at it.

The Head and water pump had to be replaced at 120,000 miles too.

Little things have gone wrong that we just haven't fixed. Like, turn signals, radio, various knobs.

Gas is horrible on this car. We spend a couple hundred dollars a month in gas.

Insurance is also VERY high on this car. It's three times more than any other car we've owned.

Giving it a tune up takes a few hours. If you aren't a mechanic you'd have to take it in. The spark plugs are very hard to get at.

We have spent more than the car is worth in just the last year.
