1992 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.4L V6

Summary:

Best Pontiac I have ever driven

Faults:

The car wasn't running when I purchased it (had been sitting for 2+ years). Replaced the fuel pump, and have driven it with no running problems.

Has a lot of electrical items that might work today, but then won't work for a week, then come back on. Was told someone did a lot of work and didn't know what they were doing.

Paint (clear coat) is peeling, power steering squeals occasionally, and rattles for a minute when started in the cold. Was told the serpentine belt ran rough until the edges frayed, but I haven't had any problem. The water tank for wiper was removed, and the A/C was barely hanging on.

General Comments:

Looks great, inside and out.

The stereo and wheels have been changed.

HUD works great.

It has a sunroof, power windows, cruise, tinted windows, and electric seats that do everything. It has a lot of power, and it's hard to keep from getting a wheel on take off.

Oil was clean. Didn't change the filter until this month (Feb).

Have been told the 5-speed is rare.

I love this car. I plan to redo everything that has a problem, and put classic plates on her and run her until the wheels fall off, or I get too old to enjoy her, or I finally get my dream car, a GTO.

1992 Pontiac Grand Prix LE 3.1 EFI

Summary:

Great vehicle

Faults:

Car is badly rusted in front edge of the hood and rocker panels.

Emergency brake cable is broken.

Power steering leak about 200 miles ago.

During winter car slips going into 2nd gear.

Doesn't accelerate all that quickly anymore; 0-60 time is probably about 13 seconds.

Muffler has rusted off.

General Comments:

First things first, I'm not very good at maintaining cars, and I drive like the stereotypical 20 year old male that I am.

With that said, I bought the car almost less than 8 months and 18000 miles ago for $750, and have only had the oil changed, new tires and the power steering fixed ($400.00).

I'm going to be getting a new cat back exhaust put on, at a cost of $170.00 including labor.

The seats are very comfortable, but at 6'2", even with the driver's seat all the way back, I can't fully extend my legs like I'd like to.

This Grand Prix suffers from the typical gauge warning light, broken trip meter, inaccurate gas gauge, and a fairly optimistic speedometer.

It's 18 years old, it's not perfect, but it sure as heck takes a beating, easily cruising at *cough 45 over cough* the speed limit.

I'm the original poster, back with an update. I needed to get the car ready for PA inspection. New exhaust rattles a little, but that isn't the fault of GM. It ended up needing an alignment, new passenger side ball joint, and driver's side trailing arm. Total cost for the 21,500 or so miles I put on it was ~$1300. Not too bad for such an old car, was a little more than the car is worth, but definitely shows reliability. The car is now for sale.

I just bought a '92 Grand Prix LE as a winter beater for my 2010 Camaro SS. It is a nice car, with just a few problems. The only thing that bothers me is the rear suspension makes a bumping noise, especially at low speeds. I have been told by the previous owner that it is the torsion bars being rusty, and needing to be freed up. Anybody ever heard of this?

1992 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Multi-Port Fuel Injection

Summary:

Absolutely worth every penny

Faults:

- Had to replace all coolant hoses

- Fuel pump went out right after purchase

- New rotors and pads

- O2 sensor

- Muffler blew out at 152000

- New power steering line

General Comments:

Being only 17, I have already gone through 4 different vehicles, but the one I owned at the beginning is the one I still have today. This car has been unbelievably amazing, and I will drive this thing into the ground before I even dare sell it.

This car drove without any coolant for 3 days, and the only thing that happened was the fuel pump died.

The 3.1 is a workhorse motor and I have ran it at 240 degrees plus for over half an hour, and she keeps running strong (not suggested you do, but this was when the coolant was leaking).

The car sounds like it could outrun any vehicle out there, but it won't be winning any races. Still fun to drive and cruise around. When you sit inside of the vehicle, you feel like you are in total control and quite safe.
