1992 Pontiac Grand Prix LE 3.1 Liter

Summary:

A sharp looking and dependable ride that still looks and sounds excellent for eight years old!

Faults:

Rear disc brakes have never been correct since the car was new. Air conditioning has failed. Rust is becoming more apparent. Dashboard indicator lights work imprpperly and show false readings as well as the shift indicator that displays the wrong gear constantly.

General Comments:

Car is eight years old and is still sharp-looking! Original exhaust still sounds excellent! Don't see any around anymore in this good condition and in this rare two year color-light beige metallic. Comfortable ride and dependable for its year and mileage! Never let me down! Don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon!

My mother owns a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix LE and I own a shop. Good thing I do because it has been at my shop more than my 81 Chevy 1/2 ton that has a lot of mileage on it.

Within the past 3 months she has put over $2,000 into this car and today, it's dying when she puts it in gear. Mass airflow sensor probably. Only another 50 bucks that she doesn't have. My BMW is a 1977 that's broken down and it's more reliable.

I bought a '92 Grand Prix almost a year ago now, and I'm having a few problems with it now (just maintenance things; some I should've known), but other than some small things, it's definitely been a great car.

On the other side of the coin, I have a friend who's had nothing but trouble with one of theirs (same year and type, only an LE 4-door). She gave it to her brother, and he has had no problems with it, so it just goes to show that it's what you do that directly affects the car.

I bought my Grand Prix SE 5 months ago and I have already had to change the electrical box in the motor, I do not know what it is called. A sensor box or something.

I had to change the brakes and rotors and that is it for now. It is just upkeep and maintenance. The car runs like a dream other than that.

The problem with your car stalling is most likely a part called an "IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE" it is located on your intake manifold just before it reaches the engine. it controls the idle speed of your engine. it is a small, round, electrical device about as big around as a quarter with a set of wires plugged into it and unless it has been replaced, it will probably be made of black plastic. it is visible as you open the hood and you will need a hex screwdriver to get the screws out of it. once you get the new part ($30-100) it is very easily replaced. The second thing that it could be is the coil pack (distributor) but I would replace the idle air control valve first. The same stalling problem happened to a friend of mine. I first replaced the coil pack ($50-used) but that wasn't the problem. The idle.. valve ($30-Napa) solved the problem.

I also own a 1992 grand prix and I love it. I have owned it for 4 months and have already put $500 in to it. the most recent things to go wrong was the starter and the rear brakes. They both went out in less than 24 hours of each of each other. Whats next??
