1999 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.8

Summary:

Which way to the crusher?

Faults:

To start with the heater blower motor started to give me problems. Only worked on a few speeds, then one speed, then none, then just stayed on by itself -even when the car was turned off! I had to pull the fuse to turn the fan off. I am led to believe the heater blower motor relay is a common defect in lots of GM cars. I bought the part for about $20 from GM and tried to replace it myself. A word of advise -take it to the dealer! Anyway that relay failed too after about 3 weeks.

The radio speakers are problematic. In particular, the rear speakers come on and off when they want to.

The transmission acts up on occasion, like it can't decide to go into gear so it shifts up and down and up and down under heavy acceleration.

Some of the black exterior trim between the doors is peeling. I colored it back in with a black marker.

General Comments:

This car is really a nice looking car both inside and out. My company had the SE for company cars, and a few of my friends including myself bought them after the company miled them out.

Funny thing is we have all had the same problem with the heater relay and radio speakers. The quality just isn't there.

The market is also very heavily saturated with Grand Prixs so they don't hold their value. Don't spend a lot of money on one, chances are you'll find a decent one cheap.

Same problem with the blower relay... it finally crapped out this morning... only works on highest setting. this will be the 4th time it has been replaced. Once at GM's cost when it was under warranty... the rest paid for by me.

Rear speakers... same problem. They work in the summer once in a while, when it is hot.

I won't buy another GM car. This car was my quality test of American made cars. I'll go back to Japanese or Euro cars for the rest of my driving days.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 V6

Summary:

Sweet performing grocery getter!!

Faults:

1. Temperature Sensor - warranty work

2. Shift Lock Mechanism - warranty work

3. Power window switch.

General Comments:

Great Performance and looks. Reliability has been very good. It has ALWAYS gotten me home. Fairly noisy ride with the OE Goodyear tires. Leather seats are wearing quite well and all of the "options" continue to perform flawlessly other than the power window switches. I get 16.5 MPG in town and about 24-25 on the highway.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharged

Summary:

Lemon

Faults:

Total transmission rebuild at 62,000. Bearings were bad in torque converter, several bad solenoids in the transmission.

Outside Temp gauges broke, HUD goes dim for no reason (bad solder joint on PC Board.) Radio displays 333 when it gets hot out. Almost all electronics have a problem.

Brakes wore unevenly right after I bought it; made a cut in the rotor, and the dealer refused to repair because it was the braking system, even though it was under warranty.

General Comments:

The car has a good engine, that is it! It is fast if you can spend a lot of money to get it working right. If you don't know transmissions, it probably isn't running right.

It handles like a boat, turns like a truck, and you need to replace the struts after 10,000 miles on the Grand Prix.

The seats are nice.

The car can be quick if you spend a lot of time working on keeping up with tons of repairs.

Sorry to here that. I bought a 1999 GTP Grand Prix with 22,000 miles in 2000. It now has now 371,902 miles on it now.

Only basic maintenance, standard rotors and pads typical for Gran Prix's. All power and HUD still working. Shifter needs replaced now for bad solenoid my mechanic says. I've had a 1989 LE Grand Prix 175,000 miles before trade in and a 1994 GT Gran Prix. They've been good to me.
