A lot of fun with great gas mileage!
Water pump at 123,000 miles.
Starter at 130,000 miles.
Bright headlamps don't work - it's a switch.
Odometer lights up only sometimes.
I love this car! It hasn't given me much trouble in the year since I bought it, so I haven't spent much on repairs.
I drive this all over the state, and I get about 33-34 mpg with a 3 speed automatic (almost 400 miles to a tank).
It corners well and handles like a dream. Only thing is it's hard to accelerate fast enough for interstate onramps, kicks in to a lower gear and tachs at 4000+ rpm.

Don't buy it
I have had this car for 7 years now. In the time I have owned this car, I have spent thousands of dollars on it.
I have replaced both the O2 sensors, alternator, transmission and clutch... and now the switch for the windows twice.. But now my most recent problem has got me concerned.
While driving on the highway, my car loses power. It's quite scary when you are on a 3 lane highway in the fast lane. When I press the gas... notta... I have to pull over, turn off the car and then start it again in about a minute. This happens about once every two weeks, always in the worst conditions... But due to the danger involved - once every two weeks is too much. Any suggestions? I have read other similar reviews but to no avail as to what the cause is. Please help.
I would not recommend this car to anyone that does not have money to burn. As with most Sunfires, it's good new for the first, say, five years or so. After that it's a train wreck! One thing after another.

It is a fine car for now!
The engine on this little car is great & has given me no problems.
However, some other features have been problematic, mostly convertible related.
The drivers side window leaks, the back window has come unglued from the convert. top, the motor to the top has stopped working and the headlights stopped working properly.
Reliable, engine-wise and gets good mileage.
Handles well and the twin cam engine handles the mountains really well.
When in 1 or 2 gear, it is fine in the snow (in town).

A car I will defiantly miss
Little problems such as gas gage was off so I was always praying I didn't run out of gas and the engine light would always be on, and when I got it checked... nothing was wrong. The passenger seat was broken and eventually my driver side window would roll back up again. The CD player would always skip when I accelerated. I was in an accident with the Pontiac Sun-fire that I owned. I was only in a 25 mph zone when it happened and the moment the 2 cars crashed, my car just crumbled, which resulted in totaling my car. I was disappointed to see it go, but I'm thankful nothing happened when I was driving over 60 mph.
It was a comfortable drive, handled well and was sporty. I wish I was the original owner so I could have been able to keep it maintained a little better, but if you know a lot about cars then you should be good. I would give this car about a 8 out of 10.

What do ya expect, it has over 160,000 miles. That vehicle is old, it has done its duty, why come on here griping about replacing a few parts here and there.
Look at how old and how many miles that Sunfire has. Every vehicle is going to break down, every vehicle will need maintenance, care and replacement parts. It doesn't matter who made the vehicle, every vehicle will have to have replacement parts at some point in its life, and nobody should be coming on here talking bad about a vehicle that was acquired at an old age, and has a lot of miles.
Any engine or transmission with over 150,000 miles is considered a extremely high mileage vehicle. And replacing a few parts within a vehicle's life time, doesn't make that vehicle junk!!
