2004 Pontiac Sunfire Coupe 2.2L DOHC Ecotec

Summary:

Decent car if you don't get a lemon

Faults:

Windshield wipers stop working once in a while.

Fog lights failed.

Drivers side headlight failed and passenger side just flashed.

Rear struts blown at 10,000km.

Very cheap paint, chips very easily.

Transmission makes a grinding noise.

Trunk lock is cheap quality; trunk was stuck shut for a period of time.

General Comments:

A decent car if you don't have any reliability issues like I have.

It's pretty zippy and decent gas.

My next car will not be a GM product. I will be looking into imports.

My 2003 Pontiac Sunfire, had to have been the worst car made. Problems started from day 1, had to have it repainted b/c of discoloration in the paint and on a white car it was very noticable. Then my tail lights went out, I took it in 6x to get the problem fixed, even had to call the police dept to get escorted to the dealership for fear that I was going to have an accident on the way. Then recently I had to have it taken in because 1 of the 4 cylinders had completely died. Then I had to take it in to get the coil pack replaced as well. The car had to have been the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned, and all of my previous vehicles were used. Imagine that, the first car I buy brand new, turns out to be the worst. I will NOT own another gm vehicle EVER. So I understand where you are coming from. Oh, another problem I had was the vent in the dashboard kept popping up, then when I had that replaced they put the dashboard on with Velcro, in which I made them replace because it looked tacky. Also the cigarette lighter quick working so did one of the air vents... OH the list of problems continue, I finally got rid of it and would NEVER own another one. Just bought an 88 Jeep Cherokee which out performs the Sunfire, and only cost 650. Imagine that... good luck with the car, I hope it gets better.

My 2003 Pontiac Sun fire has been pretty good to me. It has a nice, sporty feel to it. I had the car for almost a year now, and the car still performs like the day I bought it. I love the 2.2l ecotech, it saves me money on gas, and still delivers the power when I need it. the only problems I have had with the car is. I want to go fast all the time. I haven't had any problems with the car electrically or mechanically. The car is a decent car for the price and very reliable.

The first problem author has, is that the 2.2L ecotec engine GM has and continues to use, with minor modifications over the years, is a push rod engine (hence the good and constant throttle of it). Only the 2.4 and 2.6 were cam engines! Mine, a manual, has 90km on it, and only mechanical issue it's had was the timing belt stretched about 1 and a half inches due to changes in the original ECU. Self inflected engine rebuild!

Summary:

Great value and sporty look!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I really like my 2004 sunfire. Previous to this car, I had the 2002 sunfire (and I never had a single problem in the two years) I had a serious accident and my 2002 was a write-off. I was so satisfied with the 2002 that I decided to continue with the 2004! I love it even more! They have made neat changes! I love the mags, sunroof etc. I don't care for the fabric seats (kind of cheap) and also, strange, but I find that there is not too much headroom (and I am only 5'11'!!!) On certain angles my head touches the ceiling! Aside from that, I find that car has good kick (improved 2.2 engine) and I can really notice the difference from the 2002.

I have owned my 2004 Pontiac Sunfire since early 2008. I bought it with the 2.2 Ecotec engine with automatic trans. It had only 28000 km on it when I bought it at a dealership. It is the bright blue color with grey interior.

Now in 2015 it has 240,000 km on it. I have had minor issues with this car over the years. A few mufflers, I replaced the fuel pump, and obviously tires and brakes. Struts weren't the best, but they aren't too expensive. Ontario roads are not the best.

I always have enjoyed driving my Sunfire. I added a cool 650 watt Alpine stereo system and darkly tinted windows. It's cheap on gas and moves when I hit the gas. I'm going to see how far it takes me. It doesn't owe me anything.

I have owned all GMs and one Mazda 323. I still own a 71 Nova SS (25 years) and a 1982 GM motor home with low kilometers. I will always own GM vehicles.
