1986 SAAB 900 Turbo 2.0 turbo

Summary:

A great car for wrech heads

Faults:

Voltage regulator, starter, front wheel bearings, fuel pump prepump and driver's side seab back have broken on the car.

General Comments:

So much for the list of things that "went wrong". A list of things replaced and or upgraded on this car would be a much longer list. This car, like all "Classic" 900's (1979-1993 +1994 convert), is not for the faint at heart. These are cars that require great attention to service and any relaxation of those duties can result in large if not catastrophic failures. If you are looking for a fun, good handling car that tells you how it's running not by messages on the LCD Navigation screen, but by smells and rattles. If you want an adventure in driving. If you like tinkering then this is the car for you. You can get a slow one in a small displacement base model up so modified turbos putting out in excess of 300 hp at the wheel. You can even get a convertible version, but no matter which one it will make demands of you and if you aren't interested in that then look elsewhere for your transportation needs.

1986 SAAB 900 S 2.0

Summary:

I believe this is a great car and I am glad I have it.

Faults:

The brakes went out a few hundred miles ago.

General Comments:

This was my first ever import car. Prior to this I drove ford cars and trucks. When I first sat down in the drivers seat, the seat looked plain and uncomfortable, but was I ever wrong. The seats are very comfortable and hold you quite well in regular driving and when cornering.

1986 SAAB 900 S 2.0

Summary:

You just have to love it

Faults:

Anything that can go wrong has gone wrong.

Head gasket,

Valves.

Valve cover gasket.

Rack and pinion.

Callipers.

Transmission problems and a bunch of others.

That's with oil changes every 2,000 miles, no punishing driving, and regular check ups every six months.

General Comments:

It runs great when I can find a mechanic who knows how to service them correctly, but with the exception of a man I found about a year ago I've had nothing but idiots. Especially the local SAAB dealership. It's the most fun car I've ever owned. I just wish I had the money for a better one.

I love my 1986 900 Turbo Convertible! Bought it on the US West Coast in early 2000, already with 145k miles on it. Over a 9 month period, drove it up and down the West Coast, then across the continent to the US East Coast during a 15k-mile trip (car now has a bit over 160k miles total).

Problems? Had to replace 3 fuses and repair the driver's side power window motor. That's it. Otherwise, just kept good oil and gas in it, and drove happy as can be!

Took every windy, back road I could find.

Strong, fast, powerful, truly awesome vehicle. Having more fun with this SAAB than I had with my previous car, a Porsche.

1986 SAAB 900 Base gas

Faults:

During 139,000 miles, only the water pump, tires and battery had been replaced. Biggest expense has been with the air conditioner. No car has ever provided more reliable, safe service.

General Comments:

The only factor possibly keeping me from buying another new SAAB is price. My SAAB cost $13,000 new back in '86, and price of same base model has risen an average of $1,000 US per year, far exceeding inflation rate, cost of living index, or average annual income per capita increase. Simply, most European cars are pricing themselves out of the market, are not cars for the "working class".
