1994 SAAB 900 SE 2.0L turbo

Summary:

Practical, Stylish, Comfortable

Faults:

Strut bearings went out at 67000. $400 to fix.

Check engine light lit up every 4000 miles or so. Three seperate mechanics could not pinpoint the problem. Suspected oxygen sensor.

Transmission leaked. $800 to fix.

General Comments:

This is the best car I've owned. The only downside to this car is that it is expensive to maintain. It didn't need maintenance often, though.

Handles amazingly well in snow. During the winter I had it in the snow almost daily. As long as you have decent tires, it is difficult to make this thing spin.

Very roomy cabin. The back seats fold down. It's amazing how much stuff you can fit down there.

The back seats are spacious.

Ergonomic. Everything in the car is positioned very well. The seats are very comfortable, and visibility is excellent. When you look in front of you, all you can see is road.

Fast. Acceleration is okay. The car does really well in the high end. It's easy to get up to 100 mph and not realize you're going that fast.

The thing is great on road trips. The seats are highly adjustable, and have memory settings (probably optional). The stereo system is wonderful. The climate control system works well.

Great car.

Considering you had only put 20k miles on the car and had to replace $400 strut bearings and a $800 transmission leak, beside the check engine light coming on constantly, I would consider it an unreliable car if it were mine. I drive 20-25k miles a year. So in my case that would be a lot of problems and over $1200 in repairs in just one year. Yikes! To help put this into perspective, I currently drive a '97 Mercury Tracer that I bought one year ago with 34k miles. It now has 56k miles and I've spent a total of $230 to fix its leaking radiator. I would expect better from a Swedish luxury car.

1994 SAAB 900

Summary:

The best all round Saab I have driven considering performance, comfort, reliability and value

Faults:

Battery failed 3 times. Finally replaced by a non GM battery and no further problems.

General Comments:

The car has served us well. We drive a lot in rural winter conditions. We have had no problems using snow tires.

It is a well balanced design which is fun to drive yet very practical. My only complaint, other than the lousy standard battery, is that I find the seats to be lacking in low back support.
