1992 Saturn SL SL2 Twin Cam 1.8 Liter

Summary:

Reliable, but requires regular maintenance

Faults:

Only things wrong were the fact that I've had to replace the alternator and the cooling fan never kicks on when it's supposed to.

Rust on inside of the door (window trim).

Inside some pieces rattle but they were fixed after they got annoying.

Catalytic converter shield makes a "wonderful" noise!?!?!?

General Comments:

Good car.

Handles nicely on dry pavement, worse in rain.

Seems to have a lot of "get up and go".

Comfortable too.

It is very reliable, but has bad handling.

I don't care how reliable your car is, any car is going to require regular maintenance!

1992 Saturn SL SL1 1.9

Faults:

Outside of regular maintenance repairs, I have had two problems. The alternator needed to be replaced after 6 years and the sunroof motor is starting to run down after 7 years.

General Comments:

I love my car and the service at the dealer has always been excellent. I would definately consider buying another one. My only complaint is the rain gutters are too shallow and when you open the driver's door during heavy rain, water does drip inside.

1992 Saturn SL SL2 Turbo

Faults:

The major repeated problem I have had is with the ABS brakes. They needed to be repaired/replaced three times. Other than that the only major problem I experienced was at 96,000 miles. The thermostat, engine mount and hoses needed to be replaced.

General Comments:

Smaller complaints with rusting on the interior metal window frames, rattling of plastic components and the fact that the car is generally loud on the road (I have heard this has since been resolved). For my next car I want to move "up". If the SUV expected in 2000 is as nice as an Explorer I'd consider purchasing it. Overall not a bad ownership experience. Previously owned Ford vehicles which would have major breakdowns long before 96K miles.

I have a 1998 Saturn, and I can tell you that the road/engine noise issues HAVE NOT been solved!

1992 Saturn SL SL1

Faults:

The cruise control is slow to react and not too positive. The seat belt is placed in the most useless place possible. The glove compartment opens the wrong way.

General Comments:

Saturn has changed many of the items I complained about but from what I have read the overall quality of the car has started to approach the typical quality of other GM cars and that is going in the WRONG direction.
