1989 Subaru GL Sedan 1.8 Boxer

Summary:

Practical, reliable, user friendly, environment friendly, VERY fun to drive

Faults:

Preventative maintenance prevents anything from going wrong. but I have performed the following.

Reseal.

Water pump.

Radiator.

Oil pump.

Timing belts.

Head-gaskets.

General Comments:

It's very easy to park due to it's very tight turning radius. It's only 2wd so it's pretty zippy without the added weight of 4wd. Cruises nicely down the highway at 85+ and tracks nice and straight. The handling with new shocks and struts is PHENOMENAL. 32mpg around town, 38mpg highway. Everything in the car works and the interior has a nice, solid feel to it. Oh wait, except for those freaking electric windows.

Yeah, everything here is very true. I have the same car, and the only problem with it is the stupid electric windows :)

Very right about the windows... expensive replacement parts, since you can barely find parts in Kansas walk in salvages.

It is a very good car though. Good gas mileage.

1989 Subaru GL

Summary:

Fun, good in snow, and good on gas

Faults:

American drivers side rear break drum stripped and axle and drum replaced.

Radio shorted out.

Radiator fan replaced with after market.

Seats start to crack.

Valve cover oil leak.

Replaced bolth front axles.

Rust on the drivers front fender where the mud flap /rock guard was.

Over heating problem on steep hills, still trying to find the problem.

General Comments:

She is super in the snow.

I drove her over a 10,000' pass with snow tires 200 miles a day with no problems.

The only spin I had was when a tow truck was blocking the road to pull a SUV out of a ditch and I came around the corner and I spun into a ditch.

I got out with no problems, even with the bead of the drivers tire broke. I put the spare tire on and got to an air station and got the tire back on.

A snow car she is. There is a build up of snow in the wheel wells in deep snow.

Not a long distance driver, but better than a 85' Toyota Pick up truck.

It does not look as good as a Impreza, but it has a lot of pulling power in the hills for a 3cyl.

1989 Subaru GL 1.8 boxer

Summary:

A good first car for the price

Faults:

The right front fender rotted off.

The whole drive-shaft assembly was destroyed when I crashed it, the car still runs without it in two wheel drive.

The entire undercarriage is rotten, the whole car was abused before I purchased it.

General Comments:

The car is roomy for a sub-compact Subaru.

The car has nothing in the power department, it takes quite some time to reach 55 miles per hour.

The interior is very comfortable with the exception of leg room.

I think the best part about the car is it's durability, I lost control of it going around a turn at around 40mph, and slammed into a ditch and landed at a 90 degree angle.

The car started right up after it was hauled out of the ditch and only was in need of a quart of oil.

The only thing that i do not like about this car is it's handling.

The only reason why I am driving this car is because my Firebird needs an engine, but I think I'll stick with the Subaru after my other car is fixed.

1989 Subaru GL

Summary:

Despite a few flaws, it's a very nice, economical little car

Faults:

Air conditioner didn't work when I got it; when I took it in to have it fixed the alternator was also broken so all together it cost 200 dollars to fix.

I have had some minor transmission problems. The car leaks transmission fluid pretty badly, and I have to put fluid in it at least once a week; if I don't, it slips while I'm driving.

It doesn't accelerate fast at all. You can floor it and it still pokes around just to get up to 55 miles per hour.

The radio that came with it didn't have a very good sound quality; I thought it was the speakers, but I replaced the radio with a CD player and it sounds very nice.

General Comments:

The car is very roomy for a small car and the seats are very comfortable.

Mine came with power windows, locks, and mirrors, all of which work great.

Paint is durable; there are no rust spots, chips, peeling, etc, and I have seen this to be true on all old Subarus.

My GL does not accelerate very well; I don't know if this is just mine or if all GLs handle this way.
