1992 Subaru Legacy L AWD Wagon 2.2

Summary:

Reliable, economy, spacious

Faults:

Both the front CV boots went broken at around 120,000 miles. And now the 3rd one.

Some alignment problem in the rear wheel after 130,000.

Nothing else major went wrong in my 8 years of ownership.

General Comments:

This car is extremely reliable and cost very little to maintain.

Internal space is quite good, especially for cargo.

Handling is not too bad for a family wagon. Acceleration is weak compared to newer cars, but still OK for a 1992 mid-size.

Gas mileage is great for a 1992 AWD wagon, about 22/28 in real life.

1992 Subaru Legacy L 2.2L N/A

Summary:

Great reliability

Faults:

A/C Needs re-charged

Driver's Side C/V Joint replaced.

General Comments:

I've ran this car exclusively for the past 4 years, and it currently has 178,000 miles on it. It has never needed major engine work. It is in no way a speed demon, but the 130 hp is more than ample for cruising. Cosmetically, the car has began to rust in spots along the rear quarter panels. The interior has taken lots of abuse, but still has no major flaws and is pretty comfortable, although the visors no longer stay up (i hear this is common on this model). Generally, it is a car very worthy of the lost cost at which can be found.

This was very encouraging to hear. After joining the Subaru cult once I experienced driving my 2006 BAJA, I helped my son purchase a 1997 Legacy Outback with 175000 miles. It still handles and drives like a dream. I hope you hit 300,000 miles. Happy traveling.

1992 Subaru Legacy LS 2.2L

Summary:

Would love to stockpile this model all for myself

Faults:

The only complaint I have had about the car is the suspension. The air bags in the "Height" system are very costly to deal with any way you look at it. I did have the front air-compressor by-passed because the compressor had seized. The bags in the front are still functional, but I have to manually put air in them, which also makes for adjustable suspension in the front which I do consider a bonus. In the rear there is nothing left of the original suspension and went to struts and springs.

General Comments:

Overall this is one of the best cars I've ever owned. It has required some maintanice and a few good bucks, but in it's 14 years of life it still manages to happily surprise me. Even in the winter it leaves me lost for words on how easy it is to get around.

1992 Subaru Legacy L 1.9?

Summary:

Best used car for the money!

Faults:

I replaced the water pump and timing belt at 110,000 miles.

Tape deck quit at 145,000 miles. I should have gotten a CD player sooner anyway.

New brakes at 90,000 miles and at 160,000 miles.

Air conditioning ran out at 150,000 miles and is too expensive to retrofit.

Drivers door lock broke at 130,000 miles (it operates the power locks so it cost about $100 to fix).

Replaced battery at 120,000 and 155,000 miles.

New alternator at 155,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is a wonderful used car! I have had virtually no problems with it and it is still a pleasure to drive (aside from no air conditioning). It has a lot of power and is extremely safe in the rain and snow.

I do regular oil changes and tuneups and the mechanics tell me what a wonderful car these Legacys are every time.

It has plenty of space to carry cargo, and shorter people can sleep in the back comfortably (I'm 5'4").

The visibility is great since the dash is not really high like some cars.

Overall it feels like driving a new car still.

I really agreed with your review. I have a 1992 legacy wagon turbo, and it is a great car aside from the cup holders blocking the stereo. But my gas mileage is horrible, because of the turbo and I was wondering if you were familiar or knew what to do about that. I only get 13 miles to the gallon because of the turbo. If you have any leads on people I could talk to, or websites I could go to that would be much appreciated. thanks.

You can pick up an a/c retrofit at wal-mart for about $30. You just evacuate the remaining refridgerent in an "approved method". Then you change the fittings and then charge it yourself with the new refridgerent. The whole process takes about 20 min. I have a 92 L wagon and I did it two years ago and it still works great. I just ad a little refridgerent in the spring and its good for the summer.

Car is great, the only complaint I have is aftermarket parts don't hold up as well as the original. I had both front axles replaced in a matter of a few months and now its two years later and the boots have broken and they are clicking again, great car, my next purchase should be a '00 or '01 outback.

Your Legacy should have the 2.2L SOHC SFI motor. I have a '93 Legacy L and that's the motor I have, same with a friend of mine. It is an excellent little car thought.

1992 Subaru Legacy L Sedan 2.2 L Boxer 4

Summary:

One of the most solid, reliable, dependable, and fun to drive cars that I have owned.

Faults:

CV boots.

Replaced clutch and timing belt at time of purchase.

General Comments:

I am very impressed with this car. The quality is excellent, one of the smoothest and quietest car I have owned. Parts are also inexpensive (especially compared to Toyota).

The Legacy also has great acceleration for a 130bhp 4-cylinder. The only complaint I have is I wish the cupholders did not block my CD Player.

My friend has the same car. If you mount your CD player on the lower part of the center it sits just below the bottom of the cup holders.
