1993 Subaru Loyale 1.8

Summary:

So far... soooo good

Faults:

Starter (well at least I hope it's the starter hah) has just started to go at 42000.

Guy I bought it from said he has recharged the A/C.

Put new front tires on it, along with front brakes at about 30000.

Replaced muffler at about 40000.

General Comments:

So far so good; reliable, cheap, easy to work on, decent mileage, more trunk room than you'd expect, and it has an impressive list of features.

I was recently rear ended. I barely felt it and the Lexus had a headlight in its engine (hooray for all metal construction).

This car got me through an icy Massachusetts shore winter with very reasonable handling and no moisture problems.

I'm a big guy (6'2") and I'm very comfortable in the car, even on long trips.

Biggest problem with this car has been RUST, especially under the car. Though as I mentioned, I do live on the coast and the salt hurts especially on the old all metal cars.

Great first car, last car, safe car, or something of that nature. I'm not trying to get anywhere fast and I've got no need to look flashy, so I'm lovin' this car. However with a three speed auto and a 1.8L, it's not for everyone.

1993 Subaru Loyale 4-door sedan 1.8

Summary:

Great car to have for basic transportation

Faults:

Somebody please help me! My 1993 Loyale cuts out intermitenly like a light switch while I'm driving. And after that, I have to let it sit for a few minutes before it starts again; only to have it happen. I've changed fuel filter and ignition coil and the problem only gets worse. What could it be?

General Comments:

I love the car and other than the stated malfunction, it works great.

I had this problem from time to time with my 1992 Ford Festiva. After a few trips to the shop and some tinkering with this and that, it turned out to be a faulty O2 sensor in the end.

Try changing all of the spark plugs and plug wires. One or more of the spark plug cores may be entirely corroded. It is still possible for the plugs to fire in this manner, but with obvious malfunctions. I hope this helps.

1993 Subaru Loyale

Summary:

I love this car! :)

Faults:

There is a leak in the AC somewhere. It DOES blow strongly, just doesn't blow cold air.

General Comments:

I LOVE THIS CAR! I just bought this '93 Loyale wagon (2wd) and have owned a similar car in the past ('87 Legacy) that looked almost EXACTLY like this one.

This little car is fuel efficient, speedy, and cute as a bug. Great original paint with no rust.

Plenty of head room (I'm pretty tall!).

I've spent today just looking under the hood learning where everything is, etc. One thing I like about Subarus is how easy it is to find everything (power steering, alternator, etc.). Easy to find where to put the oil, transmission fluid, etc.

1993 Subaru Loyale 1.8

Faults:

Not a thing.

General Comments:

This is my frist car and so far I love it. I am only 16 so it's a good car. Everything in it works, including the power windows and the A/C. For being a 1993 and having 89,000 miles, that is good. No rust and nothing else bad with it. The car handles good off road. I have had the car for only a little while.

1993 Subaru Loyale Front Wheel Drive Wagon 1.8

Summary:

It just keeps ticking, Literally

Faults:

Leaks oil, don't really need to do oil changes.

Ticks and rattles when accelerating.

Exhaust leaks at engine.

Automatic trans revs high at highway speeds. Blows a big puff of smoke roughly every 1000km for no apparent reason.

Engine light has been on since I bought the tank.

Alternator replaced at 215000km.

General Comments:

I have owned a lot of cars, I have never had one with this many problems and still just keeps going without complaint.

I bought the car as a second "grocery" car in aid to running the tires off our 2000 Honda civic. 800 bucks and a windshield later I was on the road. I didn't expect the car to make it this far, I must admit it has grown on me to a point I want to find another just like it, but new!

The transmission is an animal like no other. The fact it runs at 4200 rpm at 120km per hour is outrageous, and the dealer says that's normal?, well after a year of driving I can say they are right.

I am in the market for another!

Dear... Let me explain why that Loyale engine ticks too much:

The EA82 Engine, is one state of the art engine, that never needs to calibrate its valves, due to the use of hydraulic lifters, but with time, the engine´s oil pump, loses its ability to pump with strength, so the hydraulic lifters become noisy...

The medicine to this is too easy & cheap: Just change the oil pump core. Buy the "Oil Pump Kit" at the dealer... that´s all.

A minor repair, considering that the oil pump is very easy to reach: it's located in front of the engine, just remove the left timing belt cover.

Due to the fact the the EA82 uses two timing belts, that need to be replaced at at least 60,000 KMS... I strongly suggest to change them along with the oil pump kit, and your car will become as quiet as new.

I am mechanic, working since 1985 on Subies, so I really know what I'm talking about... So change that and you´ll love to keep the car.

Good luck! :)
