1992 Suzuki Swift GLX 1.6 16v

Summary:

This car is a great commuter car, that is a lot of fun to drive.

Faults:

Ignition leads had to be replaced at around 70,000 km.

Wiring problem with tail-lights had to be fixed at 80,000 km.

CVs had to be replace at 155,000 km.

General Comments:

This Swift is a rare breed having the 1.6L 16 valve engine and is quite peppy for its size. However, because it is rare, it is often difficult to find parts for it. The interior is very comfortable (especially for long trips) and is extremely durable aside from the easy to scratch plastic sufaces. The gas mileage is also a plus. However, the stock tires that the car came with were a very rare size (165/65/R14) and had less than adequate traction in corners. 185/60/R14 are a much better size and makes for a zippy car in the corners, but as a whole is not quite as refined as some other Japanese cars. The purchase price makes up for this though. Finally, the suspension is quite firm which is nice for cornering, but makes for a bit of a rougher ride.

1992 Suzuki Swift GT 1.3L 4 cylinder 5 speed

Summary:

I neglect it, but it loves me still!

Faults:

I had the clutch replaced at 185,000 miles.

Driver side door won't open from outside.

Passenger side door won't open from inside.

Driver side window is hard to roll up straight.

General Comments:

This car has been abused to to no end. I deliver pizza in it, and have run this thing in all kinds of conditions; dirt roads, mud, gravel roads, pastures, creeks (yes creeks, and other various torments.

I only change the oil when I think about it. It has averaged out to about every 15,000 miles. No Kidding!

I have never changed the air filters.

It has 196,000+ miles on the original transmission.

Gas mileage is great. I put 10 dollars in and run all week!

This car has even humiliated a few modified NOPI cars after a light turns green.

This little go cart will get up and go.

This car refuses to die.

Sounds good, but why haven't you changed the air filter before now???

1992 Suzuki Swift GT 1.3 DOHC

Summary:

A fun, rabid, little go-kart, with good fuel economy

Faults:

CV Boots are cracking, should be replaced soon, but haven't actually failed.

Speakers were blown.

One of the fog lights was cracked.

General Comments:

Wow, this car makes me giggle every time I stomp on the accelerator, & it's hard not to. The engine happily races towards its 7500rpm rev limiter (overseas cars had an 8500rpm limiter), and really pulls hard above 4500rpm.

The handling is quite tight, & the 92-94 cars came with bigger front & rear sway bars.

My family & friends have all been amazed by how modern & sporty it looks (previous years had a squarer dash/interior). The bucket seats hold you quite well, but seem a touch high.

The ride is a bit harsh, but it's to be expected with the sport suspension & such a short wheelbase.

This car is the complete polar opposite of my Volvo stationwagon, & while I've driven a lot of sports cars, this is definitely the most fun I've had behind the wheel.

Parts are harder to find than with a Honda, but the community behind the Swift GT makes it a little easier.

I could go on for hours, but you should probably just check out the forum.

I had a 1993 Swift GTi 16v DOHC. Loved it.

I sold that car and hated every second of it. I soon bought another one.

These cars a seriously powerful for what they are. Never underestimate a Swift GTi; I have raced many cars and left them standing.

I don't think I will ever change. It's cheap, reliable and very fast.
