1986 Toyota 4Runner
Summary:
An excellent vehicle
Faults:
I had to replace the starter twice over 3 years. The starter is the main problem with the vehicle, but I heard there are easier fixes than replacing the entire starter. Usually I can get it going by just jump starting it if the starter is going bad, and then replace it whenever I get the chance.
I had to replace the fuel tank because it had a hairline crack in it.
I replaced the water pump at about 170,000 miles.
One problem is winter driving on ice. The truck is very light, so you need good tires and you need to be in 4 wheel drive pretty much all winter, unless you are carrying a heavy load. This can get expensive, because the gas mileage isn't that great in 4 wheel drive.
General Comments:
This car is great. It is very reliable. It starts in very cold weather.
It has high miles and is pretty old, but is a great truck.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I have owned 3 4Runners of this generation, and all have been reliable and easy to work on. The truck is not light, though. I believe they weigh in at around 3800 lbs. This is due to the heavy duty frame and mechanicals. I sold my 86 3 years ago with 118K. Sure wish I would have kept it for these Wisconsin winters. Maint. is simple, most everything is easy to access, just fluid changes, valve adj (very easy) and new HD shocks to replace the crummy OE's, a tune-up and she NEVER let me down. Yes, I do keep my eyes open for another one!
