1998 Toyota Avalon xls

Summary:

It is a great car

Faults:

Fan on a/c and outside temp indicator seem to be on the blink for an undetermined reason. Replaced dash assembly in April, yet still have inconsistent a/c. It will work every time I get in the car for a week and then the fan will shut off, and the numbers will disappear from the outside temp indicator. Sometimes I can turn car off and on again and it will come back on. Other times I can drive for 2 hours and it will not come back on. Has anyone else had this problem?

General Comments:

Car has plenty of acceleration.

Car is reliable.

1998 Toyota Avalon

Summary:

The Toyota Avalon stinks

Faults:

I was disappointed with Toyota and the local dealer when they refused to fix, under warranty at 36000 miles, the oil sludge problem that caused the car to quit running. My wife had the oil changed at Walmart and did not keep receipts of the oil changes. The dealer and the Toyota factory rep told me that there was not a design problem with the engine and that we had caused the problem. Further, they implied that my wife was a liar. However, for $2500 they would repair it. Great.

I had the engine repaired elsewhere for $800 and then sold the lemon at a loss. Now I find out that there is a class action lawsuit against Toyota for oil sludge buildup with this model and others. The engine is inherently defective. Toyota lied to me and the local dealer lied to me.

I will never own another Toyota product of any kind. We have switched to Kia Amanti. The Koreans are doing what the Japanese used to do. The 100,000 mile warranty is 3 times better than Toyota. However, since Toyota didn't honor their 36,000 warranty to begin with, it is a moot point.

Toyota has made an enemy, and I have a long memory.

Toyota are within their rights to decline warranty work if the vehicle hasn't got a complete Toyota service history.

We have owned a cream-and-taupe 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS with sunroof and gold-lettered ID since it was new. It's still beautiful although it has gone 111,645 miles. It's a wonderful car and has never let us down. (Of course, it has always been serviced at a certified Toyota dealer.) Besides, it drives like a dream. Backseat passengers never fail to comment on the roominess and smoothness of the ride.

Our only complaints? That Toyota's newer Avalons don't have the eye appeal and the stand-out design features of our Avalon.

1998 Toyota Avalon XLS

Summary:

This is my first Toyota and the best car I have ever owned

Faults:

I have not had any major problems with this car since I purchased it new in 1997. At about 100,000 miles I had all the fluids replaced along with the timing belt, brakes and tires. At this time the car had been in storage for 1 1/2 years and I had the money, so I did it whether it needed it or not.

General Comments:

I thought about getting a new car a few months ago, but the car runs so good, I decided to wait at least another year. The only thing I never liked about this car was the cup holders, and I see, Toyota has finally changed the design of them. I think I'd like to paint the car to freshen up the exterior, but this car runs great!

A musician's trunk: I can fit my keyboard and guitar and drums parts and sports jacket, with a small luggage of clothes, all at the same time and have just a little bit of space to spare!
