1987 Toyota Camry 4 door sedan LX 2.0 liter i-4 DOHC

Summary:

The champ of get er done

Faults:

Rebuilt top end at 428000 miles.

Exhaust rotted away, did not fix, actually made it sound tougher.

Wrecked by a 78 Chevy 3 quarter ton van on drivers side.

A/C has always worked, and so has the heater.

Tires are pretty cheap for it too.

I like the feel of the cab; it's caddy style, only with cloth.

I would like to highly recommend the Toyota Camry to anyone wanting a entry level sedan.

General Comments:

My car is modified from factory; it achieved 128 mph at the end of a 1/4 mile in 12.9. so for a 2.0l engine it's pretty zippy.

It's economical; even like this it cranks out 30 mpg on the freeway, so if the gas pinch has got you down, go team Toyota.

The transmission is crisp at high rpm, but caddy style on normal takeoff. It's the 4 speed automatic with factory push button overdrive disengagement, manual shift capability and even has cruise. The only option it did not get was the sunroof.

1987 Toyota Camry LE 2.0 gas

Summary:

Great first car or commuter vehicle

Faults:

Bought this car after the lady owner put in a new alternator and timing belt, and then was told it needed power steering pump so I got it for $500. She said it was a delivery vehicle before she bought it - has a weird logo ("Melting Man") on the cargo area driver's side window (it's a wagon).

New power steering pump and muffler at 235K ($500).

New brake rotors, pads, and rear drums at 250K ($400).

New radiator and AC system at 255K ($1200).

New fuel pump at 265K ($600 - they had to drain and remove the gas tank).

Signal to turn left buzzes, but works just holding the lane change detent.

Sometimes decides to shift out of OD when the cruise is on; cruise also sometimes shuts down (these both happen mostly on level pavement - weird).

Just had it tuned and now getting 32mpg vs. 27.

General Comments:

I drive this to work every day 25mi. each way and use the cruise at the 65 limit because it likes to go 92. It would be nice if it was quieter on the freeway. It's very comfortable, but wish the driver's seat went back further and had more thigh support (I'm 6'1"). The ride is much more controlled than my Buick Park Avenue. Handles OK for a family wagon.

1987 Toyota Camry 2.0 3sfe

Summary:

Good toy for skilled do it yourself trash recycler

Faults:

All repairs done by the previous owner were made with prehistoric tools and had been redone by me. Thanks to the inexpensive parts from junk yard, the repair cost is not high. Installed 90' Celica updated starter drive to get rid of noise during starts.

The engine is smoking on start-up due to valve seals, transmission has bumpy 1 to 2 shift cold, noisy interior (station wagon, stupid automatic shoulder belts and inner plastic door handles, failed emission components.

General Comments:

Unusulally fast midrange acceleration 30 to 50 mph.

Good brakes despite drums on the rear (OEM shoes and re-build cylinders, from junkyard).

Roomy interior.

I don't think that he's necessarily whining about a 20-year-old junker. It can just as easily be taken as a testimonial that someone with automotive know-how can buy an old car and successfully drive it without spending much money. He's simply stating that he did a lot of work himself.

1987 Toyota Camry

Summary:

Great car, very reliable

Faults:

Bushing on starter. Occasionally has trouble starting, but always starts within 4 tries. Would cost $1200 to fix, not worth fixing. Will just continue to drive and put up with occasional starting problem.

General Comments:

Other than the problem with the starter, this has been a great car. It takes a bit to get up to speed on the highway, but once it gets up there it drives like a charm, have to watch the speed. Great little car!!

According to Bosch parts company, replacing the starter drive with improved bevel of the teeth will cure grinding noise during start. Such improved drive do not have flange at the pinion gear. See my review "Good toy for do it yourself...", posted January, 06.$1200 seems unreasonably high. Good luck.
