1992 Toyota Camry

Summary:

Expect this to last a long time!

Faults:

Radio is a little on the weak side.

Sometimes the trunk won't open when you pull the lever.

General Comments:

This is my first car that my parents got for me. It runs like a dream!

The material inside the car is a little on the cheap side.

Definitely worth every penny.

1992 Toyota Camry LE 2.2

Summary:

Still better than the competition.

Faults:

Engine "bought the farm" 24 hours after used purchase from disreputable (other brand) dealer. Installed a "50k" mile takeout from japan which ran 50,000 more miles before it started leaking so bad as to be unusable.

General Comments:

Buy Toyota's NEW or slightly used. Watch out for oil leaks in cars above 150k miles. V-6's tend to last a little longer with essentially the same mpg.

1992 Toyota Camry DX 2.2L

Summary:

Excellent inside and out

Faults:

Manifold exhaust pipe broke at 45000 miles and again at 86000 miles.

General Comments:

This car is comfortable and easy to drive.

I drove it for 11 years before I had to do anything to it, except for the manifold exhaust pipe.

This is my first foreign car, and if it doesn't out live me it won't be my last.

Best car I ever owned.

1992 Toyota Camry XLE 3.0 V6

Summary:

A quick, smoothing handling, comfortable, expensive to maintain car

Faults:

Turn signal switch replaced.

Oxygen sensor failed.

Window wiper switch fell off.

Instrument cluster failure.

Air conditioner replaced.

Oil pump replaced.

Fuel pump replaced.

Water pump replaced 4 times.

Brakes needed replaced at 47000 miles.

Timing belt replaced twice, once for maintenance, once because it snapped.

Alternator replaced due to failure.

Power steering pump replaced.

Head gasket replaced.

ISC valve replaced.

EGR valve replaced.

Complete suspension replacement, twice.

Front CV boots replaced three times.

Transmission failure, twice.

General Comments:

This car has been in our family since it was bought new in 1992.

All scheduled maintenance was completed on schedule.

And the oil has always been changed ever 2500 miles.

We have treated this car with meticulous care.

The problems listed above have all occurred since 2000.

The car is really fast with the V6.

I love the way it performs, which is probably why I haven't sold it.

However, it is really expensive to repair.

I am no longer convinced of its reliability.

I am not sure if I would ever buy another one because of the problems I have had with this one.

If I did it would be because of the great performance of the car.

In contrast I started driving this car because my 1985 Audi 5000 had almost 200,000 miles on it, and had never had a problem, but I was concerned that it may soon break down on me. I am now realizing I never should have done that.

1992 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L 4 cylinder

Summary:

A reliable, comfortable family car

Faults:

I find the stereo is a little bit weak. The sound quality is OK, but is certainly nothing special.

2002 - Had the wheels redone; they started to pit a little bit.

2003 - Replaced some front-end suspension components; minor repairs.

General Comments:

This car is a tank, plain and simple.

It handles very well, and has decent power (a fantastic 4 cylinder engine and smooth shifting transmission). On the highway the car performs at an average level, so if you're looking for blazing performance, look elsewhere.

This car is very comfortable, and has proven to be extreamly reliable and cheap to maintain. I am very impressed with the quality compared to similar American cars (and I have owned a few).

I take very good care of my vehicles, and drive them often, and people often ask me if my Camry is brand new. This means a lot to me, and shows that Toyota has fit and finish down to a science.

1992 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Summary:

An over-rated piece of junk!!

Faults:

This has been the worst car I have ever owned.

My head gasket went TWICE at 50,000 miles and 90,000 miles.

The timing belt was replaced by the local dealer and snapped while on a vacation. ARGH!!

The automatic transmission failed once under warranty and again at 75,000 miles.

The power windows broke on each front door and once the drivers window crashed to the ground and broke upon impact.

The C/V joints were replaced at 100,000 miles.

The a/c quit at 100,000 miles.

General Comments:

I cannot tell you in words how much I hated this car.

I may have caught a "bad" one, but there is no excuse for such crappy workmanship, especially from a company that is "worshiped" by many, if you will.

I actually feel bad for the person who gets it (I traded it in because I was ashamed to sell it to anyone I knew). The icing on the cake was when the transmission, for the third time, started to slip again. I refused to put another dime into that car and traded it at my local Honda dealer. Four Accords and NEVER the problems I had with that Toyota. I give my autos meticulous care, and do not expect the problems like the ones I experienced with that Camry.

I even e-mailed Consumer Reports to let them know that their precious Camry was not a joy to own for eight years, like they lead everyone to believe.

Well, I guess you can say I was unhappy with that car. I guess anyone can build a lemon.

I do think you got a lemon. I have a '92 Camry XLE, am the second owner of it after purchasing it from my boss at 216,000 miles. It now has 252,000 miles on it and it's still going strong, with no real problems other than shocks, brakes and tune-ups. I think there are good ones and bad ones in every make and model.

1992 Toyota Camry DX 2.2 L4

Summary:

Bulletproof reliability!

Faults:

Right after it turned 100K, I've had minor problems like:

* Exhaust manifold cracked, just welded it back into place, no big deal. Cost $10 to weld.

* Probably the worst: Replaced the clutch - $200. Not bad.

That's about it.

General Comments:

This car has been VERY reliable and cost-effective. Used as a daily driver. The only reason the clutch went out is because I frequently do burn-outs on it, and is MY FAULT anyway.

I have 4 MTX subs that fit comfortably in the trunk, 4 amps in the wheel well, and an ultimate surround sound setup in the main console and this car can handle serious sound modifications! Most controls are present where you expect it.

The car isn't all that quick and all, considering I have some 500lbs of audio equipment in the trunk, but the handling is EXCELLENT. A lot of people thought this car is a 99-01 model, but you should see the look in their faces when I tell them it's a 1992! They thought I restored it.

Oh yeah and it's a poor man's Lexus too!

How did you get a clutch so cheap? Please get back to me. I'd be very interested to know.

92-96 camry with 5-speed? did you get lucky? I heard they were rare; I don't know anything about camrys. my friend said all were automatics. I want a five speed then!

To the commenter above, consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com says that "A 5-Speed manual transmission was standard on the Deluxe model and unavailable elsewhere." Hope that helps.
