1997 Toyota Camry LE 4-cylinder

Summary:

A lemon

Faults:

My engine froze.

General Comments:

The Toyota Oil Gel Campaign covering oil sludge damages does not cover incidental expenses related to engine damage as their PR releases state they do.

1997 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder.

Summary:

A comfortable lemon

Faults:

At 40,000 miles the lever to open the gas compartment broke.

At 60,000 the starter had to be replaced, the celoinid was almost burned in to.

At 28,000 the dealer had to add spacers to the struts, the car made a thumping noise.

At 69,700 miles the engine threw a number one rod and it went thru the block.

General Comments:

Toyota stated that unless I had gel or sludge in the engine they would not replace it. I change my oil every 3,000 miles and the engine was clean.

1997 Toyota Camry CE V6 3.0L

Summary:

Toyota Camry is nothing special

Faults:

This was my first new car, and I hoped that the Camry would be exceptionally reliable. I have been disappointed.

The V6 - 5 speed combination is very good, but it was available only with the CE trim level - this is the most uncomfortable car I've owned since my 1968 VW bug.

The cheap interior trim began breaking immediately. The flimsy plastic rear cup-holder - located at perfect kicking height - broke when the car was a year old. I passed on the replacement - $68.

I thought I'd let the dealer do the work, but abandoned that strategy when they pumped all four tires to 39psi following an oil change (max pressure for the tires was 32psi).

At 30,000 miles the front brake rotors had to be turned. The dealer wanted $300 but a local shop did it for $65.

The cheap Dunlops that Toyota provides wore out at 33,000 miles, and I replaced them with Michelins which are now only half worn.

At 60,000 miles the power steering developed a slow leak - I'm afraid to analyze it, but I have already learned that Toyota parts aren't cheaper than any other make (in spite of Toyota's high volume production).

At 62,000 miles the cheap plastic and aluminum radiator failed - the parts were $300 and I paid a mechanic another $200 to do the job. The replacement is as fragile as the original. What happened to brass radiators?

Anyway, my new Camry has cost as much in maintenance as my previous ancient Peugeot. So much for reputations.

General Comments:

The Toyota V6 engine is a wonderful powerplant, but the rest of this car has been very disappointing.

Toyota appears to have cut corners to save money, and they appear as maintenance problems later in this car's life.

Good engine okay handling, but ugly interior.

1997 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder

Summary:

This car has proved to be a mechanical nightmare

Faults:

The engine threw a rod and had to be entirely replaced after only 48,000 miles.

At the same time the dealer replaced the engine, the dashboard died. The dashboard was replaced twice before a wiring problem was found in the firewall.

At 60,000 miles the front struts had to be replaced on both sides, along with the front brakes.

General Comments:

I purchased this vehicle believing it was one of the most reliable sedans on the market---that belief has disappeared.

The dealer service has been horrible. The service department has failed to earn any confidence.

The wear and tear on the vehicle does not match the usage. I've never heard of a vehicle needing an engine, or struts replaced after only 60,000 miles.

I agree with this post 100%. I have a 1996 Camry up here in Toronto, Canada. I only have about 59,500 km (that's only about 27,000 miles) and just got the bad news today that I have to replace the front struts. Total bill is $720. I bought this Camry brand new and hardly drove it. My previous car was a used $4500 Ford Tempo. The struts on the Ford lasted until the car hit 240,000 km (110,000 miles).

Faults:

I have had nothing go wrong to date, however I have had to put new tires on the car at approx. 39K miles.

General Comments:

I love my Camry. This is the second one I have owned. My last car was a 1994 Camry. They are the most reliable cars I have ever owned. I will probably never buy any other make of car!!
