1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L

Summary:

Good, reliable, comfortable, roomy car but extremely slow

Faults:

Tune ups are easy but pesky in this car; just go for a complete tune and you'll avoid problems.

Struts in the front are incredibly loud when driving over bumps, and I personally had the water pump break, therefore leaking antifreeze, but besides that it's reliable at 173000 miles.

1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L

Summary:

Minor problems, but a reliable car

Faults:

Front struts needed to be replaced, and the rear struts are next on the list as of now, but $money$ is the problem.

Front oil seals are leaking, and valve stems (smoke on start up).

Door trims panels around window switches are popping out of place (I would say that was due to rain seeping in expanding the Styrofoam) "Keep windows up in drive-thru if possible when it rains".

Airbag light came on around 160,000 miles (Replaced sensor $600 to replace airbag sensor).

Battery corrodes really bad.

Driver side mirror fail to operate left to right (manually use to move now by hand)

Catalytic converter is going out (rotten-egg smell when accelerating hard).

Instrument cluster, climate controls lights burned out (replaced instrument cluster lights myself $10.00) (replaced climate control lights "Dealership" $255)

General Comments:

Aside from all these problems listed, I still love my Camry, the car has served me well without really any major problems such as: engine failure, transmission, or any other major problems like with other cars I've owned in previous years.

My Ford Explorer had only 30,000 miles on when transmissions problems arose, and that shows you that Toyota is a very dependable brand over any American made car. Not going against American built, come on I live here, but quality wise yes, I do agree foreign is the way to go.

The Camry is very comfortable, and I prefer to take this car on long trips than I would in a nice SUV, because the seats are very relaxed and laid back.

This car is a keeper, and I hope it only makes it past 200,000.

1998 Toyota Camry LE

Summary:

6 years, no problems! Love my Camry!

Faults:

Nothing. I've had this car 6 years, and it's never had to be serviced for anything other than oil changes.

The brake pads do wear out easily. We've replaced those three times.

General Comments:

I love this car. I'm so scared of getting a new car next month because I have been so lucky with this car. We bought this February 2002 just a few days before our first daughter was born. We wanted a safe, reliable car. That's what we got.

Maybe we just got an exceptionally made car, maybe we just take good care of it. Who knows. But I've never had to replace a thing. Never had it die, or break down, never had an engine light come on, or weird noises. It runs like a champ. We change the oil and filters regularly.

My only "complaint" if I can even call it that, is that my brake pads wear quickly. Might just be cheap brake pads we are using, might be the brakes. Who knows.

We now have two kids, and my husband, the kids and myself all ride very comfortably in the car. It handles well and rides so smooth.

My only wish, is that is had a CD player, and I might have gotten another color since mine is beige... it shows dirt well!

It gets EXCELLENT gas mileage. At least 30mpg. It actually gets up and goes pretty quickly too, it packs a lot of power in such a modest sized car.

But, now that our kids are getting bigger, and we have two dogs we want to get an SUV. We are keeping the Camry, for my husband though, I could never part with it. It's been too good of a car. I'm so scared to get anything other than a Toyota. I love Japanese cars. You hardly ever hear of them tearing up. We may consider a Toyota 4Runner.

Overall, I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone. If you buy a good quality Japanese or German car, and maintain it well... you shouldn't have any problems. They actually hold their value pretty well too. You can compare a 1998 Camry, to a 1998 Taurus, and it's almost a joke the price difference.
