2000 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L 4 cylinder
Summary:
Reliable but boring
Faults:
Let's see, I crashed the car, shortly after ownership, and I had to fix the bodywork, but nothing mechanically was broken. The airbag did fail to deploy, even though the crash was significantly above 15mph.
Next, I've had to replace the battery and terminals. but with the age I can hardly blame them.
I also had to replace the alternator (died while driving).
The cassette and CD player stopped functioning.
General Comments:
I both love and hate this car; let's start with the hate, since who likes to end on a downer?
This car is incredibly slow. Well, it's slightly faster than a 4 cylinder van, but that isn't saying much. You really have to bury your foot getting on the highway. I've literally just become a slow driver because of this. The headlights are pretty dim compared to other cars I've owned (they've been replaced and de-fogged). There also isn't very much headroom, I am 6'4" and with the seat all the way back I still can feel the ceiling. This is not a car for "larger people". The cupholders are also placed awkwardly and you feel like a crazy person reaching for your drink while you're driving. The backseats also have even more limited headroom.
Now onto the likes. First, the reliability. I've had to replace the alternator. That's the one piece of non-regular service I've done, so the driving costs are extremely low. This is a bad thing though, because I generally just don't like this type of car. I've desperately wanted it to go wrong, but it won't. Testament to Toyota reliability. I also love that I cracked 30 MPG on a 600 mile highway journey. Almost 33 in fact. This car gets great mileage compared to my last Cadillac (at around 12). The trunk is also huge, I can pretty much lug anything around that isn't a couch. And that's come in real handy. And that's about it.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Slow but solid.
If you can put up with the 11 second 0-60 times, as well as the 76-MPH quarter mile terminal speeds, you can't get a better car.
Outstanding reliability.
