1987 Toyota Celica GT 2.0 twin cam 16v

Summary:

300 K and still going good

Faults:

Nothing really except for normal maintenance.

The only thing that has gone out was the starter once (it's a stick though, so I just push started it to get it home and to the mechanics).

General Comments:

I personally hated this car when I first bought it in 1991, but it has been a very good car to me; only the starter has literally gone bad.

The car handles pretty well, and still drives as good as it did when I first bought it. I didn't expect this car to make it over 170,000 miles, but hey it is past 300,000 miles and is still going strong. Toyota made a good one.

This car even outlasted my 1996 Ford Taurus, which was bought brand new. That Taurus has been sitting in my garage since 2004, needing a new engine, but I refuse to fix it due to the fact that engine threw a rod at 33,000 miles and went through 2 transmissions.

I was going to give the Celica to my son who just started driving, but I gave him the Escort GT, which only has 140,000 miles on it.

If you get a chance to buy a Celica GT in good condition with low miles, BUY IT!!!

Hello I am writing a response to the article I wrote: 300 k and still going good.

My Celica is now at 306611 miles now and just started burning oil. Pretty good car; I am going to limit the driving of it to only around town until it seizes and then I am going to rebuild the engine after it seizes.

GOOD JOB TOYOTA! I am proud to own one. No engine work needed until after 300 K.

1987 Toyota Celica GTS 2.0L 3s-ge

Summary:

Safe, reliable, bulletproof

Faults:

Put new engine in after previous owner had done damage to the head and cams.

It sat for a year, so I put all new brakes on it, and of course tires.

This car is an animal; other than the heat issue 95% of them had, it was great. Once I fixed the heater problem, the car was great regardless of the weather.

New rad and ball joint after that.

It needed new bushings, but I just kept going since I was planning on them in the spring, once I put my other car and bike back on the road.

General Comments:

CAR IS NOW NOT GOOD. New Years night the car lost control and hit two guard rails, and 3 outta four corners of the car got hit. It drove me out and home and around still. Starts drives and runs like it always had. THIS CAR IS AMAZING, I can't find another with the body it had.

PUT WINTER TIRES ON IT AS I only had two on the front, and now I lost a classic.

If I would not get in trouble, I would still drive it; fenders, hood and all banged up.

UPDATE! took the hammer and crowbar to it. Looks almost back to mint except for rash and a broken signal on the left with the hood not quite fitting properly.

The rear end pushed in at least 2-4 inches, but all suspension and geometry are great.

Best damn car I've had. Ill keep it on the road instead of getting my other car into the snow.

1987 Toyota Celica gts 4 cylinder

Summary:

Best car ever made

Faults:

The power steering pump leaks fluid.

The air-conditioner occasionally won't start.

Car is starting to rust on lower body.

Passenger door lock will not lock and sometimes gets jammed.

Trunk lock also went out and the only way to open it is through the back fold down seats.

General Comments:

Excellent car good on gas mileage. 32mpg.

Takes off rapidly and rides smooth and fast.

Turns corners easily.

Very easy to control.

A great beginner car.
