1994 Toyota Celica GT Coupe 2.2L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Bulletproof

Faults:

Replaced parking brake shoes and hardware after stupidly using the parking brake in sub-zero temperatures (parking brakes have a tendency to seize in very cold weather).

Replaced punctured fuel line, probably caused by bad roads.

Some of the faux leather has begun to crack and split on the door rests and center console.

General Comments:

For a car with as many miles as it has, it has been a wonderful car; starts and runs every time, even in the harshest winter I have ever experienced in Iowa (2014).

Have had to make some minor repairs, but nothing that breaks the bank.

Gas mileage isn't the greatest for a 4 cylinder, but it's decent.

Handles well and has never let me down.

1994 Toyota Celica ST 1.8L

Summary:

A car that you would have to shovel dirt into the engine to stop it

Faults:

Drivers side seat has wear on it on the side closest to the drivers side door.

Rear struts have needed to be replaced but can still run fine on the bad ones.

Doors squeak when you open them (nothing a little lithium grease can't fix)

Trunk latch is broken.

Cigarette lighter blows the radio fuse every time you plug it back in.

General Comments:

This car has been absolutely awesome for me.

I drive the car about 50 miles on the highway a day and I average 28 MPG.

The interior is a little comfy, but it gets very hot inside it when you leave it out in the sun.

It's a four seater, but only 2 people should ride in it as the back seats are small and can only about an 8 year old or smaller.

The engine is the most reliable. It is not expected as a fast import, but it certainly gets the job done with commuting, and its not bare.

It has great air conditiong/heat, p/w, power locks.

My Celica doesn't have cruise control so it's a little tough driving without the cruise control.

The handling is phenominal. I haven't had a crash yet with the car and I am 18 (it was only sideswiped, not bad for bad drivers surrounding you.)

1994 Toyota Celica ST 1.8L

Summary:

Great reliable affordable drivers car with utility

Faults:

Had to replace starter in 2005 - but I drive mostly errands with a lot of starts per short mileage.

Can see wear on Drivers seat door side bolster where my back rubs with each entry and exit.

Rear interior panels tend to creak, partly due to stiff suspension and jarring.

General Comments:

The point and shoot handling of the car is telepathic. The most accurate steering car I've ever driven. Its addictive and has made driving a highway cruiser with light steering and soft suspension difficult to adjust to.

The accurate steering requires more effort at the hands and arms until you find just the right amount of input, but almost always you must use both hands.

Lack of power assist in steering at parking speeds can be a bit tiring.

Biggest complaint is the lack of horsepower (about 115) - that, mated to very short gears 1 through 3 means you must shift a great deal. The very short gears allows you to carry heavy loads without strain.

Very large hatchback hauling space with rear seats down - a great utility vehicle.

The payoff with the small engine is that I get 30+ MPG in all types of driving and never really worry about gas prices.

At street speeds you can make turns without braking and never lose grip, it turns flat. At highway speeds, hard turns suffer from lack of torque.

At speeds above 90mph the car looses its feel due to air getting under the front of car and the steering becomes too light, and about 105mph it feels as if its lifting off the road and about to go airborne.

Cockpit, angle of instruments and other controls is excellent. I like the fact that pedals are not too close together and feet don't get tangled up.

Serious lack of after-market development.
