1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 4ac 1.6

Summary:

This rail is a blast!

Faults:

The few things that have gone wrong with this car are very typical of them because of their age: alternator, heater blower motor, water pump, shocks and struts, valve cover gasket, carb adjustment, timing belt, rotor cap and wires, just mainly wear items, and of course the a/c doesn't work! That's about it, though...

General Comments:

I had one of these when they were new, and when I saw this for sale, I just went and paid the guy! It had been sitting under a tree for years, but even yet it has never left me stranded. I drive it about 30 miles to work every day, with trips across the state whenever I want to go. Sometimes it seems kinda slow, but just not as slow as everyone else! It handles great, gets a lot of comments (I repainted it mr2 signal yellow), and is very economical. Maybe other people have more luxurious vehicles, but there's no way they have more fun driving than I do. If I see another one, I'm getting it too so I have a spare, just in case!

I am a proud owner of a 1987 Toyota Corolla Sport Coupe SR-5 with rear wheel drive. It has about 124,000 miles on it now. I purchased it brand new in April of 1987. I feel this car is special due to the fact that 1987 was the last year it was offered with rear wheel drive...

The five speed manual transmission is still in pretty good shape and has never been serviced. I'm not sure what needs to be done to it. The manual clutch has been changed twice.

The only thing that I've done to it in the form of maintenance is routine such as, oil changes, plug changes, rotor and cap, air filter, brakes and of course, tires. The clutch master started to leak recently and I changed that. Relatively it is a dream to work on if you know what you are doing and I'm not a master mechanic, but I do know my way around under the hood. The one thing that drove me crazy for a while was when the relay for the pop-up headlights started acting up. The lights kept going up and down. But by trial and error I soon fixed them, and note there are three possible relays in the circuit and each one costs about $90+.

I plan to keep it forever and will soon have it repainted it's original color, silver dollar metallic.

Yours, truly

1986 Toyota Corolla GT-S 1.8L 16v

Summary:

A high performance, but highly practical car

Faults:

The plastic radiator started leaking at 75k miles - replaced it with an after-market metal one.

Converted the air conditioning to R134 in 1995.

Seats are pretty worn by now.

The clear coat over the black paint is peeling off.

General Comments:

This has been a really wonderful car to drive, and very reliable. I love the power and handling. Needs to run at high RPM (redlines at 7600) for best performance.

Hatchback with folding rear seats makes it easy to carry large items like lawn mowers or many bags of mulch.

Seems you can't go wrong with a Toyota.

1986 Toyota Corolla DX

Summary:

Bargain Basement Beauty

Faults:

The car needed a tune up, as the person who worked on the car before put them incorrectly in and the car was misfiring. The steering wheel shaked when first driven so I had a wheel alignment and tire rotation done which corrected the problem. The oil change was recently done. The cassette player wasn't working, so I had it fixed which cost $92.00 total, but it's the original Motorola and the sound system is killer. It has a small dent in the door and a little paint wear and rust on the driver's side fender which has to be fixed. Total spent so far: $400.00.

General Comments:

I bought this car as a daily beater for $685.00 from the original owner (a very nice lady who was getting up there in age and kept excellent records), while my engine on my RX7 is being rebuilt. I'm going to keep it because it is a wonderful little car. The interior hardly looks like it's been sat in. There are no rips in the headliner or seats, only a small gouge on the driver's side where the window latch is, which I can live with. It doesn't have the greatest pick up or zippy style like the 7, but that's like comparing apples to oranges. My 7 has been nothing, but problems since the original owner didn't take care of it. I had starter problems, transmission, you name it! This car, once I fixed the little things it needed has been a pleasure to drive. It's a lot roomier than my 7 and can seat 5 adults comfortably. Gas mileage is great. I get around 30 mpg on highway, even in it's antiquated state. The seats are comfortable and for what it is a point a to b car, it's more than adequate. From what other Corolla owners have told me, I can expect many more years of enjoyment from this little baby.
