1990 Toyota Corolla DX Wagon 4AFE 1.6

Summary:

The best purchase I have ever made

Faults:

Replaced starter at 150,000 miles. Replaced alternator at 180,000 miles.

Had transmission rebuilt at 320,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the best automobile I have owned in my life and I am 46 years old. It is reliable, fuel efficient, strong, comfortable, and neat looking. I want to make it to 1,000,000 miles and I am almost halfway there now.

1990 Toyota Corolla LX 4 cylinder; fuel-injected

Summary:

A well-built, dependable car.

Faults:

Required a new exhaust system every 1-2 years. I have been told this may have been a result of the short daily work commute. To be more specific, the exhaust didn't get the chance to dry out each time it was driven, leaving it highly susceptible to rust.

Power window motors quit after approximately 100,000 miles (I don't really consider this a fault - they were just plain worn out). They were replaced by an independent mechanic for just under $100 (versus the $300+ the dealer would have charged).

General Comments:

I loved my Toyota Corolla and had a very hard time selling it a few months ago. It was the most reliable car I have ever owned. Even with 100,000+ miles, I never worried about getting stuck somewhere when I was driving my Corolla.

When I started a new job which required driving longer distances on a regular basis, I bought a new car so that I wouldn't wear down the Corolla. It was great knowing that I could always drive the Corolla when my new cars were in the shop for repairs.

Now, 4 years and 2 cars later, I sold the Toyota just to make more room in the garage. I miss her. :)

1990 Toyota Corolla LX 1.6L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Boring Sidney. Boring boring boring

Faults:

Cracked head/damaged head gasket.

General Comments:

Bought the car thinking nothing major could go wrong. I guess I'm just unlucky.

The car was terribly boring. Out-run by mini-vans.

Didn't have to put much money into it - only oil and tires, until the head went.

Probably won't fix it.

1990 Toyota Corolla SE 1.6 Litre In-line 4

Summary:

Simply reliable

Faults:

We only recently acquired this car, but a few things have gone wrong already:

The oil sensor light kept going on.

The Exhaust system began to make the car sound much more powerful and loud than a Corolla should.

A brake rotor cracked.

First off, I have to say this car has never left me stranded, although some things have gone wrong, nothing has ever been such a necessity that I've needed a tow.

I do also have to say that the brake rotor was my fault, although it happened on its own. I had run the car into a curb a month or so beforehand late at night in a snowstorm. At the time the mechanic told me it was simply a bent rim (which was cheaply replaced). However a few months later when a lady lightly rear-ended me the cracked rotor gave way.

So over all this car has been very reliable, if you could ignore the oil sensor light, and having your little car sound like a motorcycle it would not have even had to go in for repairs the first time.

General Comments:

The only thing I have to say is that if you are planning on buying a Corolla, get a manual transmission. The Automatic transmission Corollas are far too slow.

I highly recommend them all around, as long as you can stand how basic they are, and the small size, then they are the perfect car for anyone who just needs to get around.

1990 Toyota Corolla SR5

Summary:

Sporty, reliable car, for a fraction of the price

Faults:

I had to replace the axles, because they were old, or vibrated when driving.

Tire rods started making noise under the car, and I had to get those replaced.

My main oil seal valve had to be replaced last year, after it started leaking.

The terminal that connects to my battery had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is great. The reason why the car was brought to the shop many times, is because I drive many miles. Driving this many miles eventually leads to wear and tear. My car is already 12 years old, but after all the repairs, it runs as if it was brand new. Not many cars on the road like it these days, so you'll definitely stand out amongst the crowd. Great car for your teenagers. Although there aren't many performance parts for this car, you can get them. Although the exterior upgrades don't make that much difference.

Bought one used in 2004. Seven years later, with 318,000 km, the car runs great (with normal and typical repairs for a 20 year old vehicle).

Great lines and fun to drive.
