1992 Toyota Corolla DX 4 cylinder 1.6 4AFE

Summary:

I will die before the car will!

Faults:

I am the original owner of this car. My car is now almost 15 years old. The following have happened to my car. Speakers blew out, water pump needed to be replaced... which I did myself, some rust which would not have happened if I had not moved to the north, and that is about it.

General Comments:

This car is the best and the only car I own. I will never sell this car. Replacement parts are very easy to find and very cheap. The car is very easy to work on. The car will not die. I drive it to work every day 110 miles round trip to work. Honestly between my wife and I the car is driven 110 miles a day 7 days a week without any breaks. Gas mileage is about 29 miles/ gallon.

My grandma has a 92 corolla DX wagon, and it's a great running car. the engine will be sitting on the pavement running when the body is long gone. That is this car's only downfall. Cheap thin metal that rusts easily. At 250,000 it's very low maintenance. A new water pump is needed for this car also. Must be a common, but inexpensive issue. As for the guy who bought it for his son, 750 is a steal.

1992 Toyota Corolla Base 4Dr Sedan 1.6L 16v

Summary:

Seems like a solid little tank, just what I seek

Faults:

Well, I just bought it, and thanks to a pre-purchase inspection, found that the alternator was overcharging, causing light bulbs to blow out. Got a tune up that was needed as well.

It has great compression, emissions, etc according to the mechanic. With his inspection, I got enough knocked off the asking price to replace the alternator and a few bucks toward the tune up. Most cities have mechanics that will go to the car you plan to purchase, mine did the full inspection for $99.

General Comments:

Seeing how I just bought the car, I cannot say much yet. So far, it seems like exactly what I wanted - a solid little car, no frills, performs adequately and looks nice. I keep hearing good things about them, and as time goes on, I will add comments to the end of this post.

1992 Toyota Corolla LE

Faults:

I purchased my Toyota Corolla new in 1992. My only compliants are the exhaust system which I had to replace several times over the years due to rust. My car also was developing rust over the wheel wells even though I washed it and had mud flaps. Toyota needs to improve the steel in the exhaust system and the metal on the body of the car. Over all I love my corolla. So much I traded it in for a new 2004 car. I love the new one even more! Toyota I love what you do for me. I would strongly recommend a corolla for anyone! I was very happy with my dealership too. They spent a lot of time with me during the car transaction. I will always by Toyota corollas!

The 1992 Toyota corolla brake light switch goes out periodically and you know this because you have to push the release button on the shifter. It switch has gone out three times in one year.

1992 Toyota Corolla LSX 1.6 EFI

Summary:

Reliable, inexpensive, and a bit of fun

Faults:

Several recurring problems plagued this otherwise reliable vehicle.

The electrical system went through fuses like water. At one point, I had to replace a fuse every week in order to keep the signal lights, headlights, and interior lighting on. I finally tracked the problem down to some faulty wiring in one of the rear signal assemblies.

Otherwise, maintenance and repairs were quite normal for a car with 180000 km on it. Replaced brake pads, tires, changed the oil, got tuneups, that sort of thing.

General Comments:

Great for winter driving in the wintry hinterlands of Western Canada. Always starts, even at -35 degrees. Had good snow tires so never got stuck in the snow.

Pretty good on fuel as well. A 40 litre fillup lasts about 500 km.

Fun to drive, until you load it up with people and cargo. With me and 3 friends (fairly large athletic types) and stuff in the trunk, the poor thing could barely make it up hills.

Seats are on the hard side, but that's how Toyota designs 'em.
