2013 Toyota Corolla S 1.8L

Summary:

Overall a good effort in terms of its engine and transmission longevity and durability

Faults:

1 bolt and 2 screws fell out from underneath the dashboard later in the evening on the first day of purchase. Was personally unable to discern where they came from, even after getting under the dash to see if anything was missing screws. Dealer was unable to tell where they came from as well. Was a mystery during the entire time we owned the car.

General Comments:

Was my ex wife's car and I was surprised there weren't more reviews for this year of Corolla, so I am adding this now.

This car was purchased to replace a 2006 Sentra she totaled when she ran a red light. The car was bought new in July, 2013.

My main gripes with the car had more to do with the interior and some of the materials used. I wasn't too keen on the hard cheap plastic they downgraded to on Corolla door panels. At one time they were on par with Camry, being high grade soft touch, but things change. The plastic could have been of higher quality. I believe around 27k, a crack developed in the door panel arm rest underneath the fabric and got worse over time, making it impossible to use the arm rest. Was replaced under warranty.

Also found the carpet to be very very cheap and the upholstery was hard to clean, but luckily it was black so it hid dirt from the kids well. It's not a velour, but almost a polyester synthetic thread. Almost like an upgraded potato sack. I didn't like it. The LE model did offer velour at the time, but the ex wasn't into that model.

I will say hats off to Toyota for engineering a seriously durable powertrain. My ex was/is very very hard on her cars and this poor Corolla was no exception. The 53k she logged before getting into another accident were 53,000 hard, hard miles. I did stay on her to keep the maintenance done, but she drives a car hard. Any car that can take that kind of serious abuse is a trooper in my opinion. My cars usually last far longer. I'm usually easy on my cars.

The 2013 Corolla is definitely made to hold up to abuse.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Toyota’s as far as quality of their interiors goes, have seriously been cheapened over the last decade.

For instance my boss owns a 2019 Toyota Camry and the interior of that car is crap. The door panels have hard plastic on them, nothing feels solid or substantial like the older Camrys did. The dash looks nice, but everything felt cheap and no better than a GM or Ford product. Actually the newer domestic vehicles have nicer interior materials than Toyota products these days. This wasn’t the case back in the 90’s-early 2000’s or so.

What Toyota does have going for themselves is their engineering prowess and reliability, but their build quality isn’t what they used to be.

They were at their peak when their cars were still made in Japan. The older Camrys, and Lexus products lasted longer and used better quality materials that didn’t wear out so fast unlike today. Even the paint was stronger and didn’t fade as fast with the Japanese made ones. Toyota’s are still good vehicles, but the competition has seriously caught up to them in terms of quality and even longevity.
