1986 Toyota Cressida 2.8 in-line 6 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent!!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong.

Vehicle needed driver's side wheel bearing and front brake pads. Parts cost to me, $54.86.

General Comments:

I had a Toyota Celica Supra with same motor. Excellent vehicle quality. I have owned 2 1986 Toyota Camrys and a 1984 Toyota Celica Supra. All vehicles had over 400,000 kms, and never let me down.

I bought my Cressida for $500. It was a 1 owner vehicle. Has zero rust and came with brand new winter tires. A steal of a deal.

1986 Toyota Cressida Luxury Wagon 2.8 EFI DOHC straight 6

Summary:

Overall the best car I've ever had, and if I replace it, I will get a used Lexus

Faults:

Just about everything has been fixed or replaced.

If you buy any car with high mileage, expect the same. Fortunately I am handy and have done a lot of the work myself.

When I first bought it, I had the engine replaced with one of those low mileage used imported-from-Japan motors just because I intended to keep it long term, and the previous maintenance was suspect (to say the least).

Then I had the transmission rebuilt because there was no torque converter lock-up.

Differential (used).

Drive shaft.

Rear 4-link bushings.

AC components.

Too many other repairs to name.

General Comments:

I have really enjoyed this car, the smooth operation and quality of engineering and materials.

In its day it was quick and was efficient. By today's standards it is neither, but it is still a fine car that is still far better than a Camry, quality-wise.

23MPG at 70 consistently and average of 19 or so.

Runs fine on regular, but the manual recommends premium.

1986 Toyota Cressida Wagon 5G-ME

Summary:

If you can find one in decent to great shape, buy it! You will be glad that you did!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong since I bought it, but:

It did need 4 new tires.

A new battery (when the guy at Les Schwab says "Wow, that car takes a large battery", you have to laugh!)

Windshield leaks in heavy rain.

General Comments:

This is by far the most amazing car I have ever had the honor of owning or driving. I bought it, because even though it had 221,600+ miles on it, the entire top end of the motor was rebuilt. The moment I took it for a test drive, I knew I would buy it.

It handles extremely well for a 1980's automobile, and has the power to move when needed. The engine is a piece of mechanical wonder. It is so smooth and powerful, but able to return 19 mpg in the city! And this is with my wagon!

The interior is amazing. I am 6'5" and I fit very comfortably with room in the rear seat for passengers. The seats don't make your butt fall asleep on longer trips, and the climate control is great for keeping the temperature in the cabin constant. The only thing I wish is it still had the stock tape deck! (Let me know if anyone has one for sale!)

Overall, with all of the other cars I have owned, including older Cadillacs and my recent Volvo 240, it is the most well rounded and pleasant car I would own another of!

I've got one also, a 1986 Cressida wagon. It's got 300,000 miles on it now and it won't pass Calif. smog test. I may just pay whatever it takes to get it through the test, because I have looked hard and long and have not found any other car quite like this, and I have had LOTS of cars over the years!!!

Well never mind. Turned it into the smog Nazis and they paid me $1000 to have it crushed. Shame, best car ever.

You made the choice to turn it over.

1986 Toyota Cressida

Summary:

Best Car You Can Buy Or Own

Faults:

Small Transmission fluid leak, but mostly stopped with a patch.

Air Conditioner stopped working at 100000 miles.

General Comments:

This being my first car it by default is the best car I have owned, but it is the best car I have ridden in or seen as well.

The car has over 196000 miles on it and run perfectly. The engine sounds great and run smooth and quiet. When warmed up, the engine idles at around only 100 rpm.

The interior is perfect and very nice to ride in. Although air conditioner doesn't work the sun roof is very enjoyable.

One of the easiest engines to work on due to the large amount of space around parts.

I would recommend this car to anyone!
