2016 Toyota Highlander XLE
Summary:
A well-made, bulletproof reliable vehicle that's built on functionality
Faults:
No major issues with the Highlander, only maintenance. Largest unexpected expense was probably the passenger side CV axle replacement.
General Comments:
After my Lincoln was totaled, I needed a reliable three-row vehicle that wasn't too expensive. While the Highlander I chose had a lot of miles, there were service records available that put my mind at ease.
I've had it now for almost 2 years and I haven't had any issues other than maintenance-type items. The largest expenses were probably the CV axle replacement on the passenger side and changing the spark plugs (labor costs!). Also, there was an issue with a plastic knuckle inside the steering column that had gone bad, causing clicking when turning. I noticed this during the test drive and requested the dealer fix it as part of the terms of purchase - they agreed and replaced the parts without any issue or additional costs to me (it would have cost $1500 to repair otherwise). The dealer mentioned this was a relatively common part to fail after 100K miles, so FYI.
As far as options, I have the mid-range XLE model. With this trim it comes with a sunroof, leather, and heated seats, which are all nice. However, a couple common features that didn't come with the vehicle - either because they're in a higher trim package or they aren't even offered - are blind-spot monitoring, HID headlamps, and remote starting.
Overall I'm very happy and I can see my Highlander easily reach 200K miles!
